i read somewhere that the frist thing to do is get them out of disposable nappies and onto cloth nappies.  Reason being that disposable nappies never get wet (they have gel that absorbs moisture and keeps the nappy DRY).  With cloth nappies, the child will KNOW his/her bodily responses and will be more aware of when they need to use the loo.

If she is out of nappies already, then all she needs is some patience and a good example to follow.  When she has anything to drink, continually ask her if she would like to visit the loo (like every 5 minutes).  Just to make her conscious of the fact.

Hope it helps, Insha Allah

Bismillah must you be so graphic  ;)

I think its a good idea to get them to sit on the toilet, just for fun, and hopefully they will slowly learn themselves, and realise what the toilets for, with a bit of guidance of course.

Maybe she is screaming because there is too much pressure about it! Do they make her sit on it for a long time?- more than a couple of minutes?

My younger son was ADHD, and was over 3 before I got him trained. He saw a tv commercial- circa 1982- of a monster tiolet- sharp teeth and all. Well-- he would never go unless I went in, sat on the edge of the tub and held on to him tightly until done! A long year to say the least!. Good luck to your family!! :P ;)

no we don't pressure her. not even a little bit.
she just HATES the washroom. everytime i say "come on its time to go to the washroom" she begins to scream and cry.

Baraa why not then get her one of those little portable baby toilets, them platics ones which she can put in another room she likes and sit on in. I think you too would be terrified if you were a wee little 2 foot tall person and someone made you sit on what would seem like a huge hole full of water!!!

Look at it from the kids point of view. Buy them a little potty, or a pecial potty seat for the big potty.

I agree with Mujaahid (huh?) Get her a special potty for herself. Take her with you when you buy it. Get her to choose the colour etc. Make it special for her. And then reward her when she does something in it...Try not to bribe her, it should come naturally Insha Allah.

I remember my mother telling me (- mujy - it's getting graphic again!! )
that when she potty trained my big brother, he used to save the "contents" ie wouldn't let her throw away, until my Dad came home from work. Because he was so proud of himself and wanted to show Daddy... all together now...."awwwww"

Incidentally I know of one woman who, before putting her 1 (!) year old daughter to bed at night, when changing her nappy, she'd sit her on the potty. It just came naturally to the little girl to use the potty after that. She is now just gone 2 years old and is toilet trained  - at night too  :o

When I decided I was potty trained I used to pull my nappy off in the middle of the night and fling it onto my sister in her bed  :D

aaahhh... toilet training anecdotes.. nothing like 'em....

I'm a mom of three, Alhamdulillah,   4 in September (InshAllah) and with my middle son, he was exactly the same.  He would scream and cry over the potty, like he was so scared.   I was thinking, "But he's over 2 now, nearly three, he's too old for nappies".   In the end, I just had to put his nappies back on him, left him for just two weeks, and tried again.   He wasn't upset at all, and amazingly has had no problems since.   I guess I would say wait until they are really ready.  You can't push little 'uns, and who knows what goes on in those minds!!! :) :) :) []

My mom always used bribery -- If we did things properly, we were given some candy, if not, we didn't get anything.  This way, we associated using the washroom with something positive.  After we stopped having accidents, she phased the candy out.
