[slm]  ;-) 's &  :-) 's (why does the sister smiley look bigger then the brother?)

I am trying to help organise a summer camp for the Muslim/Non-Muslim kids in my area. (We are very rough and tough :) and some of us are in need of some spiritual guidance ).

I was hoping some of you could give me some info on camps you many have helped organise or been to. What sort of activities did you have? Who are the Islamic speakers I could invite to the camp? Which speakers could really inspire the kids back/into Islam?

And if any one knows of any good locations in Britain/Ireland where the camp can be held, I would really really appreciate it  :)

Jazak'Allah

Any good locations in Britain/Ireland?

Depends very much on the kind of activities you're planning to have.  If its going to be outdoorsy then some place like the Lake District or Loch Lomond would be ideal, I expect.

Things like climbing, abseiling etc. Anything, anywhere that gets us away from city life and into nature, Islam. Away from street culture, tv, smoking, drinking, dugs etc all the influences that are exposed to us.

I'm also interested in facilities at the camp e.g. it it indoor residential accomodation or is it outdoor camping? Are there facilities for cooking, will there be conference rooms for talks, congregational prayers?

Any specific camp names? Can we hire it for private use by our group alone or will we have to share it with others?

I also want to include Scotland in my location list.

I'll ask my teacher mother tonight and get back to you.  She's sure to have some idea about suitable places in Scotland at any rate.  If its underprivaleged kids (and I'm pressuming from your description it is) she'll doubtless know something.

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

If you're looking at Scotland, Hania.. you may try Camp Bonally (sp?) in Edinburgh. It's a large Scout's camping ground, but you can have your own campsite. It's lovely in Summer, mashaALlah. But C-O-L-D still! ANd there's no hot water! an U imagine taking wudu'? and shower? BbrrrRRrrr!

Plus we slept under a marquee, that can contain about I think 50-100 people? And we only have 4 gas heaters. Double BBbrrrBrr.

The place set in the hills and a great surrounding areas. Good for trekking too.

You can have a camp fire as well, and some other games. As for absailing, I think it's possible, inshaALlah. You would need to ask them.

In June 1999, we had a Summer outdoor camp there, and the kids loved it, mashaALlah.

Besides the ourdoorsy games, there's also, a nasyid performance, and they make cards, hijab decoration with sweet 'lil beads and stuff.

They also have a nearby reservoir. And I remembered we trekked at the surrounding areas for about 7 hours! Tiring, and the kids complained! But the scenery was wonderful! There's one spot, where there's lush green grasses and foliage with tall trees, and the sheep were just meekly sitting and there's a stream nearby, and a bridge over it... and I thought.. . wow.. this is like jannah, subhanallah. But of course, there were LOADS of sheep excretion all along our journey! Anywho... you can choose a shorter route than the ones that we did.

I'll try and remember some of the games that we played, inshaALlah. FYI, this camp was for the Malaysian students (and the odd Singaporean!;)), but we also have children with us, so we had a seperate program for them.

It's been a couple of years.. and I'm getting old. So, I'll try and ask around and find out more, inshaAllah :)

I just wanna know, what is the profile of the kids. like age? gender? from stable families/ broken homes?

DO you have a theme for the camp? any objectives?

InshaALlah, we can structure the camp in acordance to that.

Wassalam :-)

JazakAllah for your suggestions Barr. Is camp Bonally for any organisation or is it only for scouting groups? We do not have any scout training :(

No hot water? Sleeping under a marquee with 100 others..? I will have to think about that one  :) The camp will be geared towards brothers and sisters aged 19 and under. We will probably hold two different camps for the different genders  :) We have links with young Muslims in France so we are trying to organise the camp for both the Brit and French pack.  ;D

The background of the kids is a mixture. We're all trying to work together to set the camp up for us.  Some are from broken homes and some are from stable homes. The main problem is the lack of Islamic influences to the kids. Because there are no activities, no youth groups, no place to go during the holidays we end up mixing in steet culture and move away from  the healthy Islamic environment. Many get into drugs, smoking etc. The backgrounds are varied, so even kids from stable homes end up on drugs :(

Its just such a shame that there is nothing organised by the Muslim community for the kids. The kids are the next generation of Muslims and when you see the direction many are headed in you want to cry. Sometimes I feel so saddened when the majority of our community do not help their own people.  I feel sad and helpless for the Muslims around the world that are suffering and even though I cannot go to those counties and help I believe I can still help by serving my community here. I just get a bit mad when people talk about going to the local park and creating an asault course by running about on the swings and slides and waving air rifles about as part of jihad! Why don't you go and help your local community instead!  >:(

Theres no theme to the camp Barr, thats why I am trying to work out what Islamic speakers would good at influencing the youth. I want someone 'young and hip' that the kids can relate too  :) Maybe the theme could be growing up as a Muslim in the West'. Insha'Allah what I really hope is we grow more spirtual in our 'hearts' and gain strong friendships
with brothers and sisters  :)

If you could think of anything else Barr I would really appreciate it. I *really*  want this camp to go ahead  :)

I think theres a muslims youth scouts or camps based in Brumy(birmingham). I'll try and find out the details for yah.

Theres also I think a bro who organises treks and outings based in London so you might not have to venture so far out. I think he may be a scholar. Stuff he does I think is like absailing, camping etc etc.

There is a group in Leicester who organised a similiar event to what you are intending to do, they went on a trek to Wales.

You shouldn't feel so sad, Sis Hania, at least your making some effort rather than no effort.

Insha-allah one of our aims in the summer is to organise a fun day for all the kids in the community. We're talking about 300-400 kids so make dua that it goes well. The thing is if you want to do something big like that you need to start some planning. Which I think your doing.

Easy Sis, who knows they may be already doing this but perhaps the emotion of doing an assault course runs high in their blood.

Hopefully, one fo our other projects is to run a week end trek or something similiar. Insha-allah I know it will work out.

If you need any assitance on the contacts I'll help you out.

May Allah make it easy for all of us doing these projects

Salaams
