Source: Palestine Red Crescent Society Date: 18 Apr 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OPT: PRCS update 18 Apr 2002 - International search and rescue teams from Switzerland and Norway are arriving today and tomorrow to assist in the Jenin Camp recovery efforts. The teams are specialized in urban search and recovery, rescue, and unexploded ordinance. They are bringing with them the heavy equipment and class suites for decomposed bodies that are required to deal with this level of disaster. Teams will work under umbrella of ICRC. - An UNDAC team is due to arrive and set up base in Jenin within days. - A Canadian medical team of two emergency doctors and one nurse entered Jenin Camp today with in coordination with Medical Aid for Palestine Canada (MAP- Canada). - Two bodies of children (six and eleven years old) were recovered from a destroyed building today. 14 bodies were recovered yesterday for a current total of 26 since the beginning of the rescue and recovery operation. PRCS estimates operation will require 24-hour teams for 2-3 weeks, including specialized search and rescue personnel and equipment. PRCS denied permission to bring in other medics from surrounding cities to support relief operations. - PRCS and ICRC continue to provide relief to people in need throughout the West Bank by providing food, water and medical supplies despite extreme restrictions on movement and access. - Milk for babies and children is urgently needed across the West Bank. Ramallah: 1. Day 21 of total 24 hour curfew. 2. Two PRCS Ambulance team members arrested yesterday remain in detention. Their whereabouts and well-being unknown. One medic who was detained at the beginning of the current invasion remains in detention bringing the number of Ramallah ambulance members in detention to three at present. 3. Ambulance movements are being restricted in the Ramallah area by Israeli army. Ambulances are moving cautiously due to the recent detention of staff and frequent searches and temporary detention of ambulances over the past few days. 4. In response to the urgent need for children's milk in Ramallah and surrounding villages, Two Red Cross trucks in cooperation with the UNDP (UN Development Programme) distributed milk to the public through An Aash Al Osrah Society. 5. As a result of insulin shortages PRCS in cooperation with the Red Cross began distributing insulin units to diabetes patients and hospitals. 6. PRCS HQ continues to provide local families with desperately needed relief. 7. Access for ambulances to surrounding villages remains extremely difficult. Bethlehem: 1. PRCS ambulances operating out of Hussein Hospital as the road to the PRCS Branch has been closed and blocked by Israeli army. 2. A truck from the Red Cross entered Bethlehem today to provide Bethlehem residents with relief supplies and milk. 3. Curfew was lifted for three hours today for Bethlehem residents to purchase food, water and other supplies. 4. The Israeli Army continues to prevent ambulances and medical teams from entering the Nativity Church area, Manger Square and the Old City to assist the sick and wounded. 5. PRCS Ambulances are operating to deliver relief items to accessible areas. Jenin: 1. Two bodies of children (six and eleven years old) were recovered from a destroyed building today. 2. PRCS established a Primary Health Care unit inside the Camp. 3. PRCS, the Red Cross, and the United Nations continue to search for injured persons. PRCS continues to provide food, water and medical assistance to those in the camp. 4. Under the umbrella of ICRC, International search and rescue teams from Switzerland and Norway are arriving today and tomorrow to assist in the Jenin Camp recovery efforts. The teams are specialized in urban search and recovery, rescue, and unexploded ordinance. They are bringing with them necessary equipment and class suites for decomposed bodies that are required to deal with this level of disaster. ICRC requested from Israeli Authorities po make the International rescue/recovery teams mission as easy as possible. 5. A Canadian medical team of two doctors and one nurse entered Jenin Camp today with in coordination with Medical Aid for Palestine Canada (MAP-Canada). 6. Curfew lifted for five hours in Jenin today but was imposed again this afternoon. Even with curfew lifted, the residents continue to suffer from food, water and medical shortages as several relief trucks with supplies have been prevented from entering Jenin. 7. Bodies may still be under the rubble. There is no equipment to move the rubble of buildings safely to remove them at this time. The area is still considered too dangerous for full recovery operations due to the instability of buildings and unexploded ordinance. Tulkarem: 1. Israeli army invade Sa'idah village near Tulkarem. Nablus: 1. Curfew lifted today for five hours. PRCS is using this time to distribute relief items to local residents and hospitals. Gaza Strip: 1. PRCS entered the Al-Moassi zone near Khan Younis and treated over 140 persons, most of them children. High blood pressure and diabetes cases were seen among adults. PRCS distributed food, water, milk and medical supplies. The Al-Moassi zone has been under curfew since the end of March, 2002 -- access is severely restricted.
