Salvation on Day of Judgement

Theres hadith saying that our good deeds alone are not enough for salvation and ultimately heaven on the day of judgement. Rather it is Allah's mercy that will matter.

Many hadith say the Prophet's(saw) intercession will also save many from being condemned to hell in addition to a martyrs' intercession for his/her family and a child who died in infancy saving his/her parents. Are there any other groups of people who have been granted the power of intercession?

Another point, the Quranic verse 2:254 says there will be no intercession. Is this a contradiction or misinterpretation?

assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

Parts of the Qur'an explain other parts of the Qur'an.

What i've been taught is that there will be no intercession for a person which is completely independent... meaning, it isn't up to a person to whom Allah grants the power of intercession to pick and choose whom he wants. Rather, Allah azza wa jall Himself will point out who are the people for whom intercession can be made, and these are the people who died on tawheed (i.e. worshipping Allah alone).

So in this regard, two verses later, in ayat al-kursi, Allah asks:

"Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?"

and then in surah an-Najm 53:26

"How many-so-ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable to Him."

Also, see this fatwa at islam-qa.com for a fuller discussion of the types of intercession:

I'd also like to point out that just because our deeds alone cannot get us into heaven does not mean that our good deeds amount to nothing.  It is because of our good deeds that God bestows His infinite mercy on us and forgives us and can make our deeds worth more than they actually are.   [slm]

:)
Or it could mean that our intentions when doing the good deeds count!

At-tirmithi and Ibn Majah relate that Ali bin Abee Taalib, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "The Messenger of Allah,  [saw], said, 'Who read the Qur'an and memorized it, and allowed its halaal and forbade its haraam will be entered by Allah into Paradise and will be allowed to intercede for 10 of his family, all of them were mandated to be in the Fire."

I will check on the authenticity of this hadeeth, insha' Allah.

I checked and found that Sheikh Albani said this hadeeth is weak (dha'eef).
