Hijab in the Quran?

I had a question about hijab. A muslim girl i know said that it doesn't say in the quran to specifically cover your head, only your bosom (i think she's referring to ayat 24:31

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss. "

So how do we know that when it says veil that it's a veil you would wear on your head?  What if it just means to take your veil and drape it over your bosom like Pakistani women do w/ their dupatta?   Is there any other evidence,  historical or otherwise, that tells us that the veil actually has to start from your head?

I'm sort of playing devil's advocate here (I actually do wear hijab) and I have my own little answer, but I first wanted to hear your responses. Jazakallah khair  :-*

Assalamu alaikum,
The word Khumur, plural of khimar refers to the headscarf.  Women in the past used to wear it in a way that didn't cover their necks and busoms.  Allah ordered them to change the way they were wearing it to cover them.  It wouldn't make sense to order the covering of neck and busom and not hair, how would you do it?  :-)

This is a non-issue. Why? Because Islam is not just the Quran. It is the hadith as well...wait, I  think I put that badly. What I mean is that parts of the Quran are explained by the hadith. Quran Kareem doesn't tell us how to pray, but the Prophet [saw] does. "It's not in the Quran" doesn't mean that it's not from Islam.

"Is there any other evidence,  historical or otherwise, that tells us that the veil actually has to start from your head?"

From what I understood from the Prophet's hadith, the minimum that a woman can expose is her hands(from the wrist) and face. The face, mind you, not the head.

as salaamu alaykum,

Fatima Mernissi is that you? :P

Just to take it one step further than stap, the sharia is not just based on the Quran and the sunnah (though these are the primary sources) but also 'ijmaa or the consensus of the scholars. Since the time of Prophet Muhammad [saw], the consensus of the scholars has been that hijab as traditionally understood is required.  And, btw, this is not a ruling determined by a group of men, as there were and are many women scholars who participate in the arena of Islamic law.

This is of course alongside the verse (which I think is quite clear if you look at the Arabic and the tafseer) and the ahadeeth.

wAllahu a'lam.
