Amazing! Walking Does WHAT?

By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor

Walking five times a week for 40 minutes each day, along with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), can actually restore an older woman's arteries to the same condition they were in when she was 20 years old. Dr. Kerrie Moreau of the University of Colorado in Boulder has concluded that regular walking for 13 weeks actually "reversed the aging process" for elderly women on HRT. She told Reuters that the findings "could have a number of important implications for cardiovascular disease risk."

Get out there and walk!

Moreau told Reuters that the "springiness" in our arteries naturally deteriorates with age, declining in women by about 50 percent to 60 percent by age 60. More rigid blood vessels means blood flow becomes cramped and that can lead to an elevation in blood pressure. When that happens, the heart has to work harder and that can be a factor in cardiovascular disease. Still, while there is no dispute that walking is good for almost anyone, there is much controversy over the health benefits of HRT. Moreau stressed that there is still great cardiovascular benefit that older women can reap by walking--even without taking HRT. The takeaway from this: "Just get out there and become active. Get out and walk around if you're able to walk," Moreau said. Oh yes, one more thing. She said her research results, while less dramatic, are the same for men.
