But the Mirror has found, the British National Party is nothing more than a shambolic collection of criminals, thugs, social misfits and weirdos. Racist Jean-Marie Le Pen's success in France's presidential elections has led to fears of a similar result in Britain. The BNP - Britain's leading Far Right grouping - hopes a low turnout at the May 2 council elections will help it win seats in targeted wards. So how dangerous is this "great white hope" of a party? The answer after months of undercover investigation is that it is racist, violent and xenophobic. It is also spectacularly stupid and highly unlikely to win electoral support. Unless voter apathy lets them in. I discovered just how stupid by infiltrating a Young BNP weekend camp, then joining this ragtag army as it effed and blinded its way across Britain spouting ignorance and hatred. Ludicrously named Camp Excalibur 2001 was held in the remote village of Nant Peris, at the foot of Snowdon in North Wales, to avoid a threatened protest by the Anti-Nazi League. Originally advertised on the Young BNP website, it was branded a "Hitler Youth-style" event by politicians. In fact, it was a rain-soaked farce. Posing as a disaffected Tory, I called a mobile phone number on the website and spoke to Young BNP leader Mark Collett who reserved me a place. I then sent a £10 fee to a PO Box address in Welshpool, home of BNP chairman Nick Griffin, and was later directed to the camp. Around 20 youngsters milled around eight tents in front of the flags of St George, St Andrew and the Welsh dragon. Shaven-headed Collett, a 21-year-old geography student at Leeds University and dedicated white supremacist, was in charge of outdoor pursuits. He was joined by Paul Golding, 19, of Erith, Kent, the party's "spin doctor" who proudly boasts of once meeting Le Pen. His "nerve centre" is a one-bedroom flat with a basic computer, emailer and photocopier. The truly pathetic extent of the BNP's hatred of ethnic minorities and foreigners was swiftly made clear. Golding said during a rock-climbing session: "Every white should have a big family 'cos the Asians are outbreeding us. "They all have loads of kids. In 50 years we'll be in the minority 'cos our women want to have a career and all that b******s." When Collett was handed a can of Belgian-brewed Stella Artois, he snarled: "That's f***ing foreign beer. I want Carling." At one point, he stared at the Welsh hills and bafflingly declared: "We're doing something wholesome and patriotic in this amazing scenery which makes you proud to be English." Next morning it was canoeing. But BNP fervour wilted in the rain. We retreated to a cafe where Lee, from Leeds, made the only sensible remark of the weekend: "It's my 18th birthday and I'm in a Welsh tea room. What am I doing here?" Back at the camp Griffin, a man who believes he is destined to save the English race, was reduced to cooking burgers alone in his van. Weeks later, I and party members had a lads' night out in Dartford, Kent. Party dress was fleeces, boots, Combat 18 T-shirts and - in the case of another member, Scott - an Ulster Volunteer Force top. As the DJ played S-Club 7's Reach For The Stars, Scott bemused clubbers by giving a Nazi salute on the dance floor. After spending the night at Golding's flat, we went sightseeing in London in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday. It soon became apparent that BNP members are not proud to be British in any normal way. Many regret Hitler was defeated, believing that the war was a "tragic" civil war between whites. At Slade Green station, waiting for a train, some refused to buy poppies from a British Legion seller. Shaven-headed Scott, now in a "Killing Machine" Combat 18 teeshirt, said: "I just have a problem with it, you know. Hitler is a hero to me and should be for all whites. "I'm not sure whose side I'd have been on if I was around in the war." Later, walking through Westminster Tube station, we passed a Winston Churchill poster advertising the Cabinet War Rooms. Collett exploded in rage: "Churchill was a f***ing c*** who led us into a pointless war with other whites standing up for their race." Jon, from Whitechapel, East London, a 17-year-old dropout from the Royal Green Jackets , then told me why he joined the BNP. The apprentice printer said: "My grandfather was a fascist with Mosley in the 30s. He's still got the uniform. That's how it goes in my family, generation to generation. My kids will carry on the fight." That afternoon it was time for shopping on the Portobello Road. Collett wanted an SS ring. He said: "It's the main reason I came down here from Leeds." At another militaria shop Golding picked up a 30s pictorial history of Hitler, written in German. Someone asked: "Is that Mein Kampf?" Golding replied: "No, I've got a copy of that already". As he turned the pages of Gothic script, the others looked on in awe. The shopkeeper joked: "Are you planning to start another war or something?" No one laughed. The next day - Remembrance Sunday - we met Colin Smith, BNP candidate for South London. Smith, on the BNP "advisory council" is living testament to the lie that the BNP is tough on crime. He has convictions for possessing an offensive weapon and drugs, and driving while disqualified. In fact, the BNP is a major employer of criminals from its thug supporters to senior figures like Oldham-based Robert Bennett who was convicted for his part in a double gang rape. Smith and Golding's way of paying respects to Britain's war dead that day was by pulling a pair of Union Jack frilly pants over their heads within sight of the Cenotaph. The day in Whitehall revealed another of the BNP's hates, one that Griffin is desperate to keep hidden. The Royal Family. Many members openly despise the Windsors, mainly for opposing Hitler during the war and embracing multicultural Britain. Seeing Prince Charles saluting the war veterans, Collett spat out: "He's a f***king traitor. Did you hear him say we need more mosques in this country? All Muslims are anti-British terrorists." With no trace of irony - and even less grasp of history - he added: "The Royals have betrayed their people. When we're in power they'll be wiped out and we'll get some Germans to rule properly." The one perception about the BNP that is absolutely correct is that they are deeply racist. Leeds University student Rob ranted about "Pakis" at his old school. Fellow student Andy sang The Whites Go Marching On. At Camp Excalibur, we shared a climbing session with a group of white, black and Asian children. Encouraging people to climb Simon Darby, BNP Director of IT, said: "It's perfectly safe. The most you've got to worry about is catching disease from those Asians." On Bonfire Night at Chesterfield, Derbs, the party's press officer, Dr Stuart Russell, pathetically quipped: "I quite like blacks really but I couldn't eat a whole one." So could the Far Right's success in France be repeated in Britain? No - at least, not nationally. The BNP polled just one per cent at last year's General Election. The party is desperately short of money and void of talent. But ignoring racist politics will not make them go away. Bad people succeed because good people let them. Remember that on May 2 |

| [slm] hmm that dosn't come as any news. Most institutions in Britain are racist The BNP cut with knives whereas the rest prefer to poison you slowly. Le Pen may be a fascist but what about his friend Megret who's Yahoodi? He's just islamophobic ..it seems we're the target for every nut-case this side of Arkham Frankly i don't care which of them win whether the openly racist BNP or the silently racist Blair (read Michael Moores book 'Stupid white males' for a true look at this phenomenon) If the situation becomes impossible i will leave, happy to let them have their fascist mad dogs who will very soon turn on their own people |
