Wow! BEST Snack for Your Teeth Is...

...a chocolate bar! And experts are saying this--not chocoholics. According to a study by the New York University Dental Center that was published in the journal Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, a chocolate bar is a far superior snack for your teeth than wheat crackers, potato chips, or corn chips. While it's ideal to brush your teeth after meals and snacks, that's not always possible. So if you're hungry and won't be able to brush after you eat, snack on a chocolate bar since it will do the least damage to your teeth. The other snacks, which are made of starch, tend to stick to your teeth for a long time. Your saliva washes away the sugar in the chocolate bar. The worst snack of all for your teeth is potato chips, which creates more harmful acid production than either the corn chips or wheat crackers.

There are some who think a chocolate a day may keep the doctor away. What is giving chocolate its health food status are the flavonoids ..., which help maintain a healthy heart and good circulation. They also reduce blood clotting, which can cause heart attacks and strokes. "More and more, we are finding evidence that consumption of chocolate that is rich in flavonoids can have positive cardiovascular effects," Carl Keen, a nutritionist at the University of California, Davis, told Reuters.

hey people.. just as the media is an unreleable source on middle east /muslim related news, it is dismally oversimplistic when it come to health news reports. the whole thing has serious accountability deficiencies.

Its always worth investigating who commissioned a scientific report. A scientific report from a chocolate maker praising the medical benefits of chocolate is as dubios in my books as a Nokia report on the effect of mobile phones on human brains. Always follow the cash trail....

But, the general problem about food is much deeper. Allah alone knows what is in the food we actually eat. From the hormones injected into American beef to the pesticides used on vegetables, our bodies could quite possibly be accumulating chemicals, the results of which we still don't know.

There was a recent report of oestrogen being found in water in parts of the UK's fresh water supply. And they found that male fish living in that water had actually CHANGED to female fish! Imagine what this could do to a man drinking it - if not affecting him directly, then affecting his progeny.

this study result is accurate - as it's constructed.

but it's also true that cheese is a 'far superior snack FOR YOUR TEETH' than a
chocolate bar.  this is a physical as well as a chemical effect.  (sorry
chocoholics!)  cheese doesn't produce that gummy carbohydrate/starch-oil paste
that is difficult to remove, and which breaks down into enamel damaging acids.  and
cheese even cleans that gummy stuff off your teeth.  for that reason high-calorie
cheese is 'a far superior snack FOR YOUR TEETH' than even a lower-calorie apple.  
what needs to be mentioned here is that when you can't clean your teeth,
exceptionally vigorous swishing with water is nearly as effective.

and, brother kashif, yes, indeed estrogen-like compounds (mostly estradiols) are
commonly produced as wastes.  for example, many household cleaning products
contain a lemon-scent producing compound that is an estrogen mimic.  (vinegar,
baking soda, alcohol, and ammonia are really all that's needed to clean your
house.  bleach is ok only in limited quantities - its overuse has the same rapid
generation of adaptability effect on bacteria as the overuse of antibiotics.)  and
for years labs sterilized their plastic labware by the same drying ovens they had
always used for glassware - producing estradiol contaminants in experimental
results, which were finally traced to the thermosetting ("hardening") compounds
used to form the labware.  early plastic doll bodies have also for years excreted
estradiols as they degrade - possibly a link to early female puberty, perhaps?  
that sticky surface layer on older plastics contains these contaminants.  all of
these types of contaminants have made their way into water supplies.  i'm sure
there are lots and lots of others, too.

the notorious dioxins which result from PCB degradation are teratogens
(substances which cause DNA mutations in subsequent generations), a class of
far more insidious environmental contaminants.  an entire species of gulls nesting in
dioxin-laden habitats have been observed to have excessive numbers of males
born with miniature genitalia, unable to reproduce.  the possibility of lower
numbers of male offspring could be a problem to any population, but i think
males who come to term yet cannot reproduce at maturity are a far more
frightening prospect.  note that this is not a pattern verified in human
populations -- yet.

As a scientist-type person, what would your practical advice be to people who want to minimise the amount of chemicals entering the body that shouldn't really be there?

Is it to eat organic? Is it to eat less in general?

= hmmm...my advice.  well, brother kashif, what i'd suggest might at first sound like that tired old "back-to-the-land" idea, but it's the only way to minimize your exposure to these alien chemical compounds:  grow your own food, buy from local organic farms as much as you can, and try not to eat too much prepared food.  i know that for city people this sounds impossible, but lots of people who live in cities make use of
community gardens, and permanent apartment dwellers even grow huge gardens on their balconies.  myself, i'm a doctoral candidate living in a small city.  i barely have time to remember to eat, much less to garden, and buy everything i eat at the grocery store while rarely making a trip to the local food co-op because it's not in my town.

the cost of organic foods is absurdly prohibitive, a real impediment to eating clean for those who can't garden or can't raise their own meat.  (i'm vegetarian, so i have half the concern here.)  but, in terms of food, the best way i know to be able to stay healthy while knowing you're having constant exposure to things you'd rather not take into your body is to eat what get called "whole foods".  i mean the foods that are as they were grown, not torn apart and reconfigured.  two really important foods
that i think often get overlooked in people's normal diets are greens (dark greens - chard, spinach, kale.  lettuce has little nutritional value.), and orange foods like yams, sweet potatoes, winter squash (marrows?), and, of course, carrots.  the nutrients in greens are needed for smooth and efficient nerve signalling - including thinking but also lack of agitation.  orange foods have lots of vitamin A, which keeps the supply
of vision purple high so you can see easily and well (important if you live in a smoggy city) and prevents these ear infections that so many children seem to be getting now because their A intake is so low.  (yes, there's a study showing this.  it was in newspapers,
but is ignored - vitamins are found in food but represent little profit to anyone but farmers, and to them that profit certainly IS small.)

one vitamin that is essential to keeping your immune system functioning at a high level is vitamin C.  i take 1500mg a day when i'm well - there's no way i could ever get enough from the foods i eat.  this vitamin is also important for structural integrity of the human body on
all levels.  it's used in the production of collagen, a connective tissue protein.  i'm sure you've heard of the collagen injections fancy people get to maintain a false appearance of youth in their abused bodies.  another generally published but also quite ignored study (no profit) was that men with sperm counts or sperm motility so low they were considered
unable to reproduce were given 2000 mg of vitamin C daily for two months, after which all of these men's wives became pregnant.  without a strong tail, or with inadequate supply of building materials for their overall structural integrity, the sperm couldn't get to where they
were going.  silly and simple, but we're only good factories producing our own components if we remember to provide the necessary materials to build those components.  i would argue that poor nutrition alone is responsible for the appearance of countless fertility clinics, and that most of those "customers" could solve their probelms on their own.  
those who can't - well, i have mixed feelings about their situations....but that's even further off the answer i'm supposed to be giving you!  a final note on this off-the-topic topic is that it's also been found that it's the age of the male and not the female that is more responsible for birth defects in children.  somehow we've been convinced that the eggs should be thought of as  'old', all having been produced at once and then stored.  
a new study found - to the triumph of logic, if you think about it - that it's the age of the male that most matters.  (study ignored, again.  no on wants to hear this either.)  eggs are produced by young women, sperm are produced daily.  the age of the male is the age
of the system of production, including the genetic material.  

one last published study that was ignored:  whole milk (all whole dairy products) contain molecules (fatty acids with a certain arrangement of double bonds in their carbon chain tails) which work in the body against the development obesity and diabetes - the two are often connected.  this observation was first made back in the 1970s, but the researcher
was branded a nut, and the work was ignored, until someone else recently verified it.

if i've failed to answer you adequately (as i suspect might be true), ask me more specific questions, and i'll try to stay on the topic!

two resources i'd suggest:
 
for knowing what to eat and why:  Nutrition Almanac (mine is old, it used to be put out asa new edition periodically.  can't remember the publisher.)

for keeping up with science:  Science News - a weekly.  (this is great, it summarizes news in all fields of science.  helps me keep up with fields not my own.)  ask your library to get this if they don't already have it.

I'm a London dweller, so buying stuff from organic farms is really out of the question. Even my spinach and greens all come from the supermarkets and i don't really trust their branding, either for organic or GM-free foods.

In this country, the pro-GM lobby has been able to successfully campaign to relax the definition of what actually constitutes GM-free food so that food that is definitely GM-contaminated can be passed onto customers bearing the title "GM-free."

The only thing i can do is to grow my own veggies, but even thats hard going cos i've got a concrete garden! *laugh*

Your guidelines are quite helpful, but i wanted to ask, are these vitamin supplements safe to eat? I mean, they don't have other processed stuff in them do they? I usually take a few pills of cod liver oil for the bones, but then i read a report which stated some brands contain absurdly high levels of a harmful chemical.

And ... just to continue with my "don't trust anyone" tirade, are reports in these scientific mags reliable? I mean, with huge biotech firms having more and more direct control over what goes into our food, there are cases where they've buried scientific reports that are unfavourable to their products or doctored results to make their new product seem like the best thing since sliced bread.

Just some thoughts.

  Here I was, minding my own business when- - WHAM-- I see CHOCOLATE splashed across the page! I ate it even as a diabetic because it soothed my frustrations with life. Now that I'm low-carbing(diet) big time- here we go with the chocolate! HELP!! I think I'm going to need a double diet [] in order to survive :'(

now you have gone one step too far.  One thru nine are no problem.  But not drink coffee in the car.  I don't think I would know how to turn the engine over without a cup in the holder just waiting for me.
