Sunnah Prayers

I cannot find in any of my literature if the Sunnah prayers are said exactly like the Fard, ie: saying at-Tashahud as in Fard prayers. Or do you skip it and go right into the Fard prayers? This has bothered me for a long time- I hate doing something wrong.

I don't know of any difference between the method of performing a sunnah prayer and a fard prayer.  As far as I know, they are performed identically (except for the difference in the niyyah, intention, of course!)

Allah knows best.

As br. Abu Hamza pointed out there is no difference in 2 rakat of sunnah and fard salah apart from the niyaah.
But there is a small difference between 4 rakat of fard and sunnah. In fard, you have to read a short surah after Fatiha in only the first two rakat, not in the last two. However for sunnah, a surah (or a few ayat) have to be read in all 4 rakah.

hope this helps

Thank you Noor for your answer- my books didn't say anything about Qur'anic recitations! Is there a book I can read that tells more than just "2 raka'as before and 4 after" kind of info?

I don't know of any specific books on salaah, but you can check out Fiqh-us-sunnah
for some aspects.

The rectitation of the surah/ayat after Fatiha is among the sunnah of prayers and here's what the above book has to say about it: It is sunnah for the person to recite a section of the Qur'an after al-Fatihah during the two rak'ah of the morning prayer and the Friday prayer, and the first two rak'ah of the noon, afternoon, sunset and night prayers, and in all of the rak'ah of the superogatory prayers

inshaAllah this is of help

I don't have the daleel for this, but somewhere along the line I was taught that when I pray these sunnah prayers they should be prayed as 2 rakahs and not 4 rakahs altogether.  For example my sunnah prayers before asr are 2 x 2 rakahs.  Does this mean that if I want to pray this sunnah prayer as 4 rakah then I should recite another surah after al Fatiha in each rakah?  Do you have the daleel for this?  Jazakum Allah Khair.

a few clarifications ...

1. the only thing that is *required* for the prayer to be valid, as far as the recitation of the qur'an goes in the standing position, is surah al-fatihah.  that's it.  there is consensus upon this among the scholars.

2. there is some difference of opinion among scholars whether 4 rak'ahs of sunnah prayers should be said with 2 tasleem or a single tasleem.  The most correct opinion *seems* to be, wallahu a'lam, that they should be prayed with 2 tasleem.  And this is the opinion of Imam Ahmed and Imam Shaafi'ee.  The hadith which supports this opinion is found in the Musnad of Imam Ahmed, and it goes:

"The prayers of the night and the day [i.e., other than the obligatory prayers] are two by two.”

The Hanafi opinion seems to be that 4 rak'ahs of sunnah prayers should be said with a single tasleem.  However, I don't know of any evidence for it, wallahu a'lam.

3. it is sunnah NOT to recite *anything* after al-fatihah in the third and fourth rak'ah of the fard prayers.

4. it is sunnah to recite some verses after al-fatihah in the third and fourth rak'ah of the sunnah prayers for those who follow the opinion that 4 rak'ahs of sunnah prayers should be said with one tasleem.

wallahu ta'aala a'lam.
