Ok Brothers and sisters, I need your opinion.  How do you feel about the term Islamaphobic?  Maybe I'm the crazy one, but that term is so off to me.  One, by using a term that was derived from HOMOPHOBIC, it gives increasing argument for their own arguement of HOMOPHOBIA.  I think this is a very lazy attempt at find a anti-muslim catch phrase.  I know CAIR uses this term alot.  And I think some people say, they rather choose Islamaphobic than anti-islamic because it's too close to anti-semetic.  All I am saying is, let get creative, but if you are going to bite off someone and take their catch phrases, atleast choose a group that's legit.  What do you have to say?  I guess I am the "Mad Muslim" today.

Personally I use the term religious bigots when referring to those people.  Everyone understands what bigotry is, and by using a more general term such as religious, instead of a specific term like islamic, it causes more people to be aware of the term and to relate to the term.

Its better to use a general term, then a specific term.  A good example that comes to mind is the Abercombrie and Fitch t-shirts that made fun of chinese people, and consequently were pulled off the market  (I have a link to the picture of the shirts on the front page of my website in the blogger).  The articles in the press about this news did not say, anti-chinese, nor anti-oriental, but rather they said, racist t-shirts.  This is a far more powerful word, because other groups (brown, black, yellow, red, etc) understand all about racism.  So by the same token, we should be using general terms such as religious bigots when we see people unfairly attacking Islam.

[glow=red,2,300]HaRisa[/glow] I know what a phobia is, that's like high school vocab.  Do you know what it means to "Coin a Phrase"? People coin phrases so it's easy to associate their cause or their issue with out thought.  Same thing with advertising, they coin a catch phrase so when ever you hear that phrase it brings certain things to mind.  Pavlovian conditioning(for all my Al'bany Suhail Farooqi groupies), with out thought, it provokes a reaction.  Anti-Semite or if you call some one a Nazi, these term immediatly call on thoughts that place a person in a certain group.
[glow=red,2,300]Shaz[/glow], does it erk me that much.  Yes, but mainly because I am some what of an artist and this lacks so much creativity.  I don't have a term to subsitute with yet.  But I am working on it.  I just hate the lack of creativity in the Ummah sometimes, and then when we do copy, make it atleast a reputable source.  And I am not the only one who feels like that, other muslim groups who use that term wrestled with it for a while before using it.
Oh [glow=red,2,300]baloo[/glow], I like what you said, but it helps when you coin a phrase sometimes.  It's like the difference in having basic vocabulary and being a word smith.  A word smith can pick a word that sums up the what the person is feeling in it entirety.  Jews don't say racism, they say Anti-Semetic, this form of racism is only associated with jews.   It undeniable and no one can share that term.

I don't like the term islamaphobic either.. It's like someone who couldn't think up a word and just took someone elses and modified it.  And I don't think it conveys the full meaning of the hate, anger, bigotry, injustice, ignorance some people have against Islam. ie people like emerson or pat robertson etc.. can we call them islamaphobic? do they fear islam? probably...that's why they do all the stuff they do in the end right.. but it doesn't say everything about them.

anti-islamic is a good word but i don't think it has that  'this is an inherently bad thing', cause i can see some non-muslims thinking yeah anti-islamic is good, we're anti-islamic, anti-jihad, anti-fundamentalist.. etc...

i guess we could bring it back to general terms like bigotry, racism, religious descrimination... or hmmm maybe the best thing is a mix of the two...
anti-islamic descrimination,  racial bigotry against muslim peoples etc....?

I think islamophobia is essentially ok as a term. However it appears to be a term for people opposed to islam as a religion whereas i think people
like the recently demised Fortuyn hated muslims as a group of people.

For instance his quote that islam is a backward religion(coming from a guy who led with his backside thats a pretty bizzare statement).

I think we need a term which reflects the cultural hate that europeans have always had for anybody from the east from the time of the greek/romans to now.
