Asalaamu Aleikoum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

I often find references to this book ("Fath Al-Bari") in others, particularly as a source for ahadith.

Can anyone tell me more about this book please?

Jazaka Allah Khair.

I don't believe its translated into English.

FATH AL BARI: by Ibn Hajar al Asqalani (d.852/1449), a 14 volume commentary of Sahih al Bukhari. It is sometimes described as the work by which muslim scholars repaid the debt they owed to al Bukhari.

Just to add to what bhaloo has said ...

For every major book of hadith (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood, Sunan Al-Tirmidhi, Sunan Ibn Majah, Sunan An-Nasaa'ee, Al-Muwatta, Masnad Imam Ahmad, 40 Hadith Al-Nawawiyyah, Riyaad As-Saaliheen, etc. etc.) there are sharh's, which, basically, are commentaries on these books.

Sharh is to hadith as tafseer is to Qur'an.

And just like there is not just one boook of tafseer for the Qur'an, every book of hadith has multiple sharh's, written by various authors throughout history.

The most famous sharh of Sahih Bukhari, by far, is Imam Ibn Hajr's Fath al-Bari.

Things that a sharh delves into are: the complete chain of narration with a description of each person in the chain, the circumstances of the hadith, the lexical meaning of every word in that hadith, other ahadith that are similar to this hadith as well as aayaat from the Qur'an, the grade of the hadith (sahih, hasan, mu'allaq, da'eef, mawdoo', marfoo', mursal, etc), lessons/rulings derived from the hadith, etc.

Unfortunately *none* of the innumerable sharh's that are out there have been translated into english!  This is an area where the english-speaking populace is seriously missing out!

Jazaka Allah Khair for your answers.  What prompted my question was that I saw a book that was an English translation of bits of Fath Al Bari and was wondering whether it was a good one to get.

Now I can't find the link!!  If I do, I'll post it, Insha Allah.

Jazaka Allah Khair again.

I think you're talking about this book:

http://www.ihyaproductions.com/tape_catalogue/descriptions/bk-107.html

I bought this booklet last ISNA.  I haven't really read it in entirety, but looked through it.  One has to wonder on what basis these excerpts specifically were chosen from the immense volumes of Fath-al-Bari to be translated into the form of a booklet.

In any case, it's very cheap ($5.00), and it'll give you a *taste* of the kinds of detailed discourse that exists in Fath-al-Bari regarding each hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari.

If you're looking for a good book on the subject of sharh (commentary of hadith) in English, I would strongly recommend the Commentary of the 40 Hadith Al-Nawawi by Dr. Jamal ad-Din Zarabozo.  It comes in 3 thick volumes, and is *very* well written masha Allah.

Wa'alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It's from a different Jawaab Al-Kaafi.  Not the one by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim.  What it is is basically 20 fatwas dealing with death, life in the grave, and Yaum al-Hashr (Day of Gathering).

Jazaka Allah Khair.  I may avail myself of this one.  I have one or two other books by this brother and, Masha Allah, they're very good for novices like myself.
