Nursing as a Career?

As Salamu Alaikum

Even though a lot of people will tell me (and have told me) that I have plenty of time to choose a career, I wanted to try and see if I can get my mind narrowed down to at least one field before I gradute from high school. lol

I know I will probably change my mind a lot, but I was considering NURSING as a career. Does anyone know about the difficulties and such of being a nurse? Is it really as awful as people say or actually somewhat rewarding? Please do reply with any information you might have about this particular career, such as income, types, etc.. - and any other similar if you can. I'd really appreciate it :)

Thanks in advance (impatiently awaiting responses)

Dear little  :-)-- if you had asked this question 15 years ago, I would have said by all means, try nursing. The last few years, however, have put a terrible strain on the nurses still in the field, and those just entering. The patient to nurse ratio is sometimes 13-to-1, with an LPN, or only a CNA to assist. With "primary care" a big deal, one nurse doing assessments, meds, IV's and bandage changes for any more than 5 patients is dangerous. If you have any writing courses, use those as an excuse to go to local hospitals and interview the nurses who are working "the floor". Spend several days checking things out- every place will have an occassional slow time which makes everything look good. And in some countries, like the US, we do not have division of patient care by sexes, and you will be doing intimate cares for male as well as female patients, unless you work in Obstetrics. As with any career choice, there should be lots of thought as to do you want to spend your whole life doing it, and can you be happy with any changes that may come. At age 51, and with a back injury, finding a new career has proven to be more than difficult, it's almost impossible. Take all the care , and time, that you can before settling into a career choice. Your health, both physical and mental are more important than the job, no matter what it may be.

JazakAllah Khairun for the response :) lol I did realize that a nursing job would be hectic but I just didn't realize to what extent. I plan on going to a few hospitals and talking to the nurses there hopefully soon. If not, then.....gr I dunno..

Are there any other similar careers having to do with medicine but don't require the whole 12 years of medical school lol Such as pharmacist or physical therapist ...etc.

Do reply with any opinion/thoughts/suggestions/etc please :)

My college roommate went on to become a physical therapist.  She was a biology/chemistry major in college to keep her options open.  Then she did a two year masters degree to become a physical therapist.  You might be able to do it faster if you know you want that from the start.  I know she really likes it, and you get to keep regular hours -- no night shift, on call type of stuff -- or so she says.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Pharmacy is a good profession. I heard that pharmacists are in short supply and fresh graduates get good jobs easily. The demand for pharmacists will remain strong as the U.S. population ages and prescription of drugs increases. Pharmacy is a non-contact profession where one can work flexible hours or start their own business. You would have to like chemistry though ;)

I will also recommend optometry. Optometrists don't have to go through the long MD process. They have similar work characteristics/opportunities as pharmacist, I think, although it involves more contact (which might or might not be to your liking).

It is good that you are considering your career options early. Talk to pharmacists, nurses, etc to get a better understanding of their work. In the end, it has to be your decision and what you feel most comfortable with.

Wasalaam.

That'd be great Sis Nouha! I'd really appreciate it. lol My parents really want for me to go into Pharmacy for some reason (probably because a daughter of one of their friends is into it) I heard you had to take a lot of chemisty for that. lol Doesn't sound like much fun, but since I don't plan on working for the rest of my life, hopefully I could manage to please my parents in some way - since they are the ones which are going to be paying for my education - and have been all my life. lol Maybe it won't be so bad. Who knows, I might even come to like it ;) *trying to think positive* Anyways, please do keep replying with any more suggestions - I'd really like to hear them. lol Positive and negative comments are welcome as well.
