Assalamu Alaikum, I was wondering about the permissibility of standing up as part of an audience during the pledge of allegiance recital (US). Does anyone here have information about this and what it means to do so? Is it shirk? Wassalam P.S. if this has been discussed before I would appreciate it if someone would kindly point me to the thread. Jazakumullahu khair. |

[slm] its debatable among many muslims, cause we shouldnt show praise to nothing except Allah(SWT) and part of the verse says 'one nation under God.."....... but u can go to islam_qa.com, and ask... or wait til seven waked up from her long sleep and finds the old thread if there is one and post it:) wasalam nouha:) |

[slm] I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic, for which it stands, with Liberty and Justice for all. In public school, I never had any problems with sitting down for the pledge after I explained myself, until I came across one Spanish teacher. I didn't explain myself because for most of the semester, I sat way in the back and was not visible behind the 30-40 other peeps. We changed seating and suddenly I was in the front and continued my practice of not standing for the pledge. When the teacher asked me why I didn't, I tried to give an short answer but he wasn't taking it and began to get angry and shout at me, in front of the whole class. I stuck to my guns, though I was near tears. Since my dad had told me he'd back me, I told the teacher that . Finally we went on with class, later my dad did talk with the teacher, a long talk, the teacher came back and kind of apologized to me but still insisted that he didn't want anyone who wouldn't stand for the pledge in the classroom, I would have to wait outside until someone summoned me from the inside(occasionally they forgot), in the winter cold while the people who agreed to say the pledge were warm inside. I also remember the kindness of fellow classmates who tried to staunch my tears(not literally) and the fact that I was among the best students, if not the best in the class. Would I do it again? Yes, and this time I would not take being left out in the winter cold for refusing to pledge to 'the republic which stood for liberty and justice for all'. None but Allah has liberty and justice for all. |

Assalamu Alaikum, Actually, now that I think about it, it wasn't quite the pledge of allegiance. It was that alma mater thingie that they have at a university orientation where they ask you to rise. The pressure to conform is difficult to resist. It was kinda like a prayer, I guess. Any one know what I'm talking about? Wassalam |
