assalaamu alaikum

I saw a book some time ago called something like "Fatwas for new Muslims" or "Q & A for new Muslims."

I think Al-Basheer published it, but i can't find it listed on their website. Does anyone know the one i'm talking about?

I believe this is the book you are talking about:

Fiqh Made Easy
by Dr. Saalih al-Saadlan

http://www.al-basheer.com/viewBook.asp?itemNum=1008

Its a really good book, explaining all the basic things all Muslims should know, especially new Muslims.  I recommend everyone having a copy of this book.

as salaamu alaykum,

I just read an excerpt from a book entitled "Answers to Common Questions from New Muslims", collected by Ali Abu Lauz, translated by Jamal Zarabozo.  I think the book was published by IANA, but I just checked out their site and I couldn't find it.

on a personal note, I found the excerpt I read pretty.. like harsh.  ("why the christians and jews are on the deviated path", something like that.)  the approach the book takes might not be appealing to some.

Hope that's of help inshaAllah :)

wasalaamu alaykum

ps - arshad my bro bought that book but I've never read it.. it looks sort of .. dry?  heh, sorry.. inshaAllah one day ;)

hmm.. any other books people can recommend? I definitely don't want to give anything harsh.

I was actually thinking that a good educational set would be Imam Anwar al-Awlaqi's lives of the Prophets which is a really good set of lectures. He discusses lots of different issues in the context of the lives of the Prophets.

I think it would be best for a new Muslim to stay away from a Fatwa section.

The reason is that their knowledge base is limited and they will most probably not accept a fatwa as easily as one who has been Muslim for a long time.

Also- usually a discussion needs to occur for the newbie to fully understand.
The discussion would need simple reasoning and may be more effective than an ayat or hadith.

For example: When I was a new Muslim and had met my future hubby I still had alot of male friends.  He did not like this and probably tried to convince me using hadith.  It wasn't until he asked me if i would mind if he went to vist a girl- friend that we worked with- that I finally got the message.

as salaamu alaykum,

hmm.. bro what kind of books are you looking for?  just general info about the beliefs of Islam, or more of a how-to guide to practicing?

for general info, I'd recommend anything by Yahiya Emerick.. the Complete Idiot's Guide to Islam is very very good, and comprehensive.  And it's on sale now for $13.27 here :)

* not a paid advertisement for Amazon Corp.

wasalaam :)

ps - kathy I totally agree with u sis :)

Something which is more focussed on practising Islam, and answers questions that enw Muslims typically have. How do i do this, How do i do that? Do i have to change my name, etc.

btw. the book by Y. Emerick didn't actually get many great reviews... forget the middle two (one of which sounds like its authored by some Jew) but the last one was a bit worrying.

Thats exactly what Fiqh Made Easy addresses.  Its great for new Muslims.  Something like Islam for Dummies or the other books Yahiya Emerick has written (and I do highly recommend his books), don't serve the purpose that you are looking for, but Fiqh Made Easy does.
