assalaamu alaikum

Trying to find information on the internet is getting quite annoying of late. It seems that everywhere you surf, and for every little bit of information you need, you have to register your details.

It can be so time consuming especially when you need info quickly.

And the worst example is this. I was forced to register with an Islamic website a few weeks ago to listen to some of their audio lectures, which i grudgingly did. And then without permission they added me to their mailing list!

Who asked them to? I didn't.

And look at the message i get when i went to unsubscribe myself from the mailing list:

Once your email is removed from the list:

You will not be able to listen to lectures that require membership.
You lose all personalization features (MyAudioBase, MyPrayerTimes)
Your SalatPager account, if you have one, will not work

Terrible, terrible.

slm,

There's a new browser called Mozilla where you can click on an option that kills popups.. pretty nice if you ask me! anyone try it out?? As for registering emails... annoying.. i used to always have an extra "junk email" account that i used to get passwords and stuff when i registered for downloading or listening to stuff...

actually, according to my sources (i.e., the post-doc in my lab who answers all of my computer questions), netscape IS mozilla.  mozilla was the original and still exists , and netscape is just the commercial version.  i've been trying to wean myself off netscape to use mozilla, but i have "aesthetic issues" (yeah, don't laugh...some of us are just cursed in that way) so i'm still using my netscape 4.7.  (and i don't like 6 either....)

in addition to the handy pop-up annihilator feature, mozilla is supposed to be more compatible with all those bill gates programs we're all being forced to use - i have to send word documents fairly often, and word crashes netscape a lot.  as i often say to the why macintosh? question, "bill gates and steve jobs are both kind of crazy, but while steve stole from xerox (mouse idea), bill stole and profited hugely from his best friend (steve's whole windows idea)."  i find it hard to support such a personally detestable individual, even as little as i have to against my will.

for a recent glimpse into bill's megalomanical mind, check this out.
this is scary to me, and one more reason i'm glad i don't use any of bill's stuff.  a friend told me he's already been getting personal greetings at websites where he is not even registered when he goes there using internet explorer - that's passport, i believe.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, some politicians and business leaders have
called for a national identification card, but Forman said that's not in
the works. "We don't have any plans for a national ID card," he said.

The White House is instead pursuing an "e-identification" initiative, an
effort to develop ways to authenticate people and businesses online who
already have government identification numbers such as Social Security,
business-registration and employer-identification numbers.

At the government-leaders conference, attended by representatives of 75
countries, Microsoft presented a blueprint for its "e-government"
strategy that suggests they use Passport to verify the identity of
visitors to their Web sites. It also suggested that its bCentral
business Web site could be used to process business tax payments and
that citizens could use its MSN Web site to handle address changes and
voter registration.

Governments have long been some of Microsoft's biggest customers. Its
desktop software for office workers and back-end software running
networks are widely by used by state and federal agencies, and the
company has developed Internet portals for the United Kingdom, Mexico
and other nations.

But getting the United States to use Passport to authenticate its 285
million citizens online would be a coup for the Redmond software
company. It would also be a large step toward fulfilling Microsoft
Chairman Bill Gates' stated goal of getting everyone on the Internet to
use Passport as their sign-on tool.

OK now-- for this PC illiterate- how do you get "mozilla"? Do you have to get a different server(I guess that's what microsoft IE is :P) I hate all the pop-ups- sometimes three or four on top of each other. I'd really like a way to rid myself of those pests >:(

laila,

here's the address for mozilla:
http://www.mozilla.org/

i'm not the most computer literate person either (ah, we chemists - what do we know if it's above the molecular level??), but i'll give you my own version of an explanation:

mozilla, netscape, explorer, entourage - these are browsers, they're your means to access the internet.  they contain their own e-mail functions (for example, netscape has messenger).

your server is like, well, a local phone company - it's the hub through which all your internet activity is centered.

and google, yahoo, lycos, snap - these are search engines - they carry out the nitty-gritty of filtering those massive piles of data to look for what you're asking about.

and you could probably get much more articulate descriptions from SOME people (that other kind, you know what i mean - the non-chemists, those people with computer science degrees or inclinations......    :D )

Assalaamu alaikum,
your server is like, well, a local phone company - it's the hub through which all your internet activity is centered.
That would be a internet service provider. They are the intermediary communication link that connect your computer to the server - the computer that actually has the information being requested by you. So a server is basically a computer running a software that allows others on the web to access information on its hard drive.

Okay, Mozilla, I actually dowloaded mozilla and have been using it for a few days. I like it, it appears to be slightly faster, has better font size control, and of course, no pop-ups. There seems to be some bug in my version (Release2) that sometimes on pages lines of black boxes appear. Has any one else experienced this on is this unique to my computer?

Wasalaam.

One thing I've noticed is that my hotmail account doesn't let me log in when I'm using Mozilla. Is this because they have configured hotmail to only work with IE? Or is it my cookie settings?

wa alaikum us-salaam,

Hotmail works with mozilla for me. One thing I am noticing is that mozilla *might* have a shorter time-out time than IE... that might be a cause ?

mozilla can be configured to identify as a different client. If micro$oft does not really allow connections from mozilla to connect to hotmail then you can configure your mozilla to identify as IE5.5/IE6. Hotmail will think that it's accepting connection from IE.  So it should not be a problem.
Oh thinking again it may be a feature of Konqueror, I don't remember exactly if mozilla has this feaure, sorry I don't have my personal *nix machine here at work to verify. I'll try to update inshallah when I verify from home.
