Two Cups of Tea Every Day Do WHAT? By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor Tea may strengthen your bones and prevent the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis. Researchers from National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Tainan, Taiwan concluded that longtime tea-drinkers who consumed two cups of black, green, or oolong tea every day for six to 10 years had stronger bones--by as much as 6.2 percent--than those who did not drink tea. The Associated Press reports that the findings, which were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, could have broad public health implications, because fractures associated with bone-thinning osteoporosis and low bone density are a global problem expected to worsen with the predicted increase in the number of older people worldwide. By some estimates, nearly half of Americans who are 50 and older are affected by osteoporosis or low bone mass. Put another way: the number of hip fractures could rise from 1.7 million in 1990 to 6.3 million by 2050. So what's the magic ingredient in tea that strengths bones? It's a combination of fluoride and the chemical compounds known as flavonoids that include estrogen-like plant derivatives. But do note this: Previous research on tea-drinking and bone strength is limited and has been mixed. Dr. Meir Stampfer of Harvard's School of Public Health called the results interesting but far from proof that tea strengthens bones. "It may be other characteristics of tea drinkers'' that explain the bone mineral density differences, Stampfer told AP. Turn tea time into a daily ritual for your good health! |
