Salman Rushdie - Satanic Verses

[slm]:-) and ;-)

Salman Rushdie....I heard he wrote books that slammed Islam. I haven't read his books, but have heard that they are banned in most Islamic countries - esp. Satanic verses.

This week is multicultural week at our school and they are highlighting achievements of foreign writers in our school library. They have Salman Rushdie's Satanic verses on display and claim that he is a great 'salvation writer'!!!! :o

A lot of Muslims at our school are enraged at the fact that our library could promote a book that passes anti-Islamic views.  >:( Many view it as an equivalent to if someone posted the swastika all over the school. We want to talk about this to the librarians and the vps but we need something substantial to talk about. We don't want to be talking on impulse, cause no one will listen to us.

Are any of you familiar with Rushdie and his writings? Any suggestions on how we should deal with this issue??

Pls. respond ASAP

advise your library that you view satanic verses like mein kampf

and that you feel insulted that instead of highlighting many other great writers in asia they are supporting somebody who you regard as no better than a propagandist for 19th century orientalist racist views

salaams,
I think a good start would be to contact CAIR's civil right department and see if you have a leg to stand on.  And if so, what's your best course of action.  I think deffinantly a letter writing to the editor of your student news paper would be good.  They are always looking for something to write about, especially hot issues on campus.  Whatever you do, keep a cool head, don't be over come with emotion, and know that most student hang in the Student Union and not the library.   Well ignore that last bit but proceed with caution, sometimes to much of an uproar will cause more to read this garbage.

Jazakallah for your advice br. Muqaddar and br. Naeem....This is what we got done so far....we talked to the librarian and found out that it was apparently the English dept. who displayed those books. We are scheduled to have a meeting with the vp and a couple of English teachers....until then we've got a petition going to ban the book...or atleast counteract it with a book that is more representative of Islam. Let's see how it goes...

This thread here highlights some of the reasons why Muslims find the Satanic Verses distasteful.
