I just recieved a forward which said '99 Names of the Prophet  [saw]' - now i know there are 99 Names of Allah - but these were different names. I've never read anywhere that there are 99 Names of the Prophet?
Please clarify it for me.

JazakAllah Khair.

I don't know if there are specifically "99", but there are many 'nicknames" of the prophet [saw] such as ahmad, mustapha, al-ameen, nur al-anbiya etc...

:) About the 99 names of the Prophet(saaw), this was an attempt made by some, to equate these with the 99 names of Allah which we all know and we have many Hadith's about them. There is no basis in Islam of the 99 names of the Prophet(saaw), as far as I know. This attempt by some people could even be misleading, because the Prophe(saaw) is not equal to Allah in any way. By saying that the Prophet(saaw) has 99 names just like Allah could be misleading.

A (logical) assumption :-

1.  When we refer to the "99 Names of Allah swt", we are referring to His [i]attributes[/i]  [sup]i.e.[/sup] The names that best describe His inherrent powers.

2.  Having said this, it would reason that when we refer to the "99 Names of the Prophet Muhammed [saw]"  we would be refering to the names that best describe his virtues, the qualities that best describe his character.

I cannot therefore see the equality equation?

Assalamu'alaikum,

I'm not aware of the forward that you are referring to, and hence, would not know the 99 names given.

But as suggested by Jannah and bismilla, names are given to the Prophet are those that describes Ar Rasul [saw] or a name that is specified for him as stated in the Quran etc.

Interestingly, I have  a book call Asma' Al-Nabi Al-Karim - The Bounteous Names of Prophet, and has, in all 269 names. And, this is just the 1st volume.

The book quotes basis from the Qur'an and Hadith for the names he was being called and/or what he was described to be, and a particular name was given to him.

But, I don't know... some of the basis given, are descriptions of the Prophet quoted from hadith and Qur'an, not necessarily proper names of which he is being called by the sahabah or that given in the Qur'an.

Here's an example:

Sayyiduna Al Awsatu
Our Leader the Most Moderate

Ref - Albaqarah 2:143

[i]Thus We have made you an Ummah justly balanced (ummatun wasata) That ye might be witnesses over the nations[/i]

Al Awsat means one who is just, (most moderate ie. adopts the middle course) or makes the best judgements in all matters. It also means teh best (selected; central part). May Allah bless the one who said this in praise of the Holy Prophet.

"O the most moderate of all people without exeption, surpassing all who live with each other in excellence and those who rival each otehr in precedence. You are indeed the most exalted of all Arabs!"

Similarly Allah the Almighty has described his Ummah as being the most balanced and just saying,"Thus have We made you of an Ummah justly balanced", That is the outstanding Ummah, of equitable composition, that is well balanced and avoid extremes.
