Assalamu alaikum sis
Good topic.  I've got lots of these :)

-Ok, first time I ever had to cook anything for my hubby and someone who came to eat with us (who fortunately is as unfussy as my husband).  We wanted to make meatball tajine (stew) and like I said before, I didn't know the parsley from the coriander.  My husband sort of all put it in the pan for me while I watched, flustered and handed him the ingredients (when's that embarrassed smiley gonna be ready :)).  The his friend said: who cooked this, and I pointed to my husband and he said: you can tell, meaning that it wasn't all that great, but if I'd tried it it would have been a disaster.

- for the first 6 months to a year of our marriage, I didn't have a pressure cooker, and I didn't really know how to cook meat in order for it to become tender.  I served my husband shoe-sole meat for that whole time.  Later when we got a pressure cooker it was stainless steel, and I burned a lot of things.  It wasn't till we got an aluminium one (which I know isn't very healthy) that my cooking started looking normal.  I'm lucky enough to have a husband who likes (at least he says) the stuff that's stuck on the bottom of the pan and the taste of burned food.  Is that possible!?  He always cleans off the bottom of the pan with bread (unless it's completely calcinated).

-the real disaster (what I first thought of when I read the topic) was this:
my husband's elder brother and a few other family members are coming to dinner---for the first time.  Now I know that where they come from, they like stuff they can eat with bread, nothing fancy as long as you can sop it up with bread.  I also know they don't like spicy food.
One of the best things in Moroccan cooking is this sort of flaky pastry that can have either fish or chicken.  We ordered a fish one from the caterers, and I made leg of lamb in the oven.
(In the meantime everything that could go wrong did.  The electricity went out, the refrigerator started to defrost, we didn't go shopping till about 3 hours before dinner had to be ready, I made lots of fancy salads that no one touched etc etc).
The fish pastilla was HOT.  I mean even for me it was spicy.  Everyone was real quiet while they were trying to get it down.  I was hot and uncomfortable even on the inside. "Hotsauce anyone?" I tried to joke.  They tried to laugh but I don't think they thought it was very funny.
Then I brought out the leg of lamb.  It was stuffed with spinach or something.  Glad to see some meat, they took out their bread and dove in... except there wasn't much sauce at all and you could tell they were disappointed.
I still get embarrassed when I remember it all.  Fortunately they came after that and I was able to make up for it.

I'VE GOT LOTS OF THESE STORIES :-/

And it is similar to M.F.'s, we are typically curry eaters with either rice or roti(bread), and spicy food is not a problem but apart from that my inlaws looooove  Chinese dishes. The first time I made a chinese combo for them was a complete diaster :'(.

I made sweet and sour chicken, vegetable fried rice and chicken corn soup and as you put it Mariam, "every thing that could go wrong did" :o.
I put too much vinegar  in the sauce and it was more like  :P and sour chicken.............the rice were so SOGGY that I could have mashed them and fed to an infant :(.

The only saving grace was the soup and we had so much left over that I packed some of it up and sent it to a neighbour  , and when she oppened the lid and saw the rice she said "oh, why did you send me so much HALWA ??? (the rice looked so naff that she thought it was some sort of a desi sweet).

Of all my cooking disasters this one was the worst considering it was the third month of my marriage and the first time that we called ALL of my inlaws :o

Looking back I think it was hilarious ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
:D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :-/ :D :D

well I have totally ruined several meals over the last 25 years, but probably my biggest blunder was the first meal I ever cooked for my husband.  It was just a few months after we had met.  I was not a Muslim but I was learning.  My mother gave me one of our families favorite meal recipes.  I was so careful to season just right  Not over or under cook.  The presentation had to be just right.  :P  He arrived and we sat down to a beautifully set table.    He smiled politely  :) said everything looked nice...BUT...
He wouldn't eat..    ??? I had never told him what I was making, and he wasn't eating the baked stuffed pork chops.   :o   Oops,  Out for Pizza we went!

I, too, have had meal disasters!

Once I invited a Muslim for dinner at my family's home. He was the first Muslim I had ever met and I knew nothing about Islam. It was a holiday and I liked to bring home those who may be lonely. It was Easter- and we served kielbase, ham and colored eggs- all blessed by the Catholic Church!

The poor thing- he must have felt like he was in "Shirk Hell!"

The worst meal I ever made was Shark.

My 1st husband and I had eaten it at a restaurant and it was delicious. I wanted to make him happy and decided to buy some at the local market (in the mid-west- far from the ocean- first clue)

As I began to prepare it I noticed that it smelled fishy(- well- shouldn't it?it is from the ocean- second clue)

It was delicious.

That night my hubby got food poisoning. His all night vomitting still haunts my mind!
