| Salaam sisters, A friend of mine is working on this really cool project to teach American educators about Islam. She wants to get input from Muslim women. Here are some of the questions she has. Also, feel free to add stuff that you think is important. She's looking for as much information as possible. If you could post your answers, that would be great. :) Wasalaam, Noera · As a female member of the Islamic community, could you describe some of the positive and negative aspects of your being part of this community---from both contemporary and historical perspective. · From my own experience, I know, I’ve to make a number of adjustments to living in the US. Could you explain some of the adjustments you make. · Americans appear to be a bit perplexed about the rather negative image that they have in Islam. Can you explain how you think contemporary Islamic women view US (government), Americans and American culture? · The media represents a major force in contemporary life. How does the media affect your perceptions of yourself, Islam and Western Society? · Can you explain, how Islamic women might view their sons and daughters involvement in Islamic extremist movement? Could you explain salient characterstics of a mother/son’s, wife/husband’s relation in your own country and Islamic culture, in general. · The relation between men and women may be problematic in any culture. Can you touch on some of the areas of concern you have for women in Islamic societies (particularly the role of women have in the “NEW” Islamic societies). · As an Islamic women being educated in the West, what attitudes do you think people from your country have about you and your decision to come to the US? What skills and attitudes do you think you will take back to your country from the US? |
