Well i live in Dubai :) and i gotta say that i luurve it ! The weather's getting quite hot, so i suggest your family brings clothes that they feel cool in. Sunglasses are a must! Shoes/sandals that are open are a good option since they'll keep your feet cool. Drinking lots of water & juices is essential. You dont have to worry about mosquitos etc, you dont really get those here.

Erm places, well theres lots to do here! Depends on what you like i guess. Theres lots of parks & beaches. Oh yes, they've recently got cable cars here too! - Which is just for the evenings in these months, but it sounds really good, i'm planning to go soon. Then they also have hot air balloon rides. Umm..here the life is mostly at night, thats when most people go out, since its cooler and well everythings open till late. Oh yeah..and you get HALAL food everywhere!!!!!!! ;D The taxis here are safe and comfortable so you dont have to worry about transport really. For more 'adventurous' things you can go wadi-bashing, desert driving etc., for those things you'd have to contact the places that have day-trips. Theres go-karting, paintballing...all that sorta thing too! And i think the women will looove shopping since theres lots of malls here & its a safe place.

I cant think of any donts at the moment...! :S But overall, i think your family will have a good time here & inshaAllah the heat wont bother them too much. :-X

If i think of anything else, i'll post.

Here is something from my experiance.
If you are travelling thru Heathrow on Emirates and connecting from a different airline with less than 2 hours stopover in Heathrow, it's pretty sure that your luggage will not go with you, hapenned to me more than once. So pack little something in your cabin baggage. Make sure your cabin baggage has weels, you have to walk and walk and walk and keep walking to reach immigration check place and they don't have carts for arriving passengers. Such a large airport has only one immigration check point for all terminals. and when you reach immigration your first impression will be discrimination as they have seperate lines for arab countries' citizens and american citizens and seperate for all others, but once you go out of the airport then there is no much visible discrimination. If you need visa it's much convinient to carry the visa along with, else make sure your visa has been sent to immigration and you carry a fax/photo copy.
If you want to drive there and if you have an american driving license, you can get a temperory driving valid for 1-6 months by paying a small fee, please carry 2 pp size photos, your driving license and passport to dmv. Driving is pretty easy except there are not clearly visible street names and too many round abouts. Driving thru roundabouts for an american driver is a little tricky.
Don't miss desert safari, it's a really a good experiance if you get a really good driver. Well most have belly dancing at the end of the safari, so talk in advance about if you are not comfortable with that.
I believe it's too hot and sweaty at this time of the year, when i went in sept and april it was so hot that i would shower twice a day and would still stink.
The best thing I like about Dubai is food, you go anywhere and you can eat without asking if it's halaal, but just be little careful, some mutinational places do serve pork.
Never say anything about the rulers, my cousin spent a night in jail when he mentioned some ruler name in not so good manner.
Hope this helps.

[slm],

I feel sad when I hear about Dubaiim, when I went there I was really hurt by the simple acts of muslim. In one ear I had the azaan being called and my eyes could see the dirty people drinking alchohol, I kept kidding myself that this is a muslim country. I really wish the scholars had the guts to stand up to all the injustice that is being meeted out. I can understand why your cousin got arrested salik, I really do wish that Allah either give these rulers hidayat and they change, remove them from power and put someone who is good there and if that is not the case, the hard lesson may be learnt by the death of the king or somebody waging war on em.

I mean its like some people don't fear Allah all together , it seems a few gold coins and the lure of money changes the hearts and conditions of the people.

How can the help of Allah come ? It will never come until we are ourselves change from the depths of ignorance we are in today, to raising the flag of Islam just like our sahabas did.

Sigh man...what a depressing state we muslims are in...

Salaams
