Has anyone read, "To Be a Muslim" by Fathi yakun and "Agenda to change our condition" by Hamza yusuf?  I am thinking about getting these books, but i wanted to see if anyone here had read them and if they thought it was a worthwhile purchase :)

Jazakallah khairun!

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

I'd *definitely* recommend purchasing the Agenda by sh. Hamza.  It's actually a short booklet, probably no more than fifty pages or so, but I've found it to be very very beneficial and useful mashaAllah.  It's basically a list of practical suggestions about what you as an individual can do to better yourself, and from there better the Muslim community as a whole.  The chart that comes with the booklet is especially useful (and very challenging.. and once you attempt to follow it you'll know what I'm talking about ;))

hope that's of help inshaAllah :)

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

'Agenda to change our condition' is an amazing book masha'Allah. Not only did i read it but a local chapter of an organization has based its tarbiyah program on this book's concepts. If you are not sure read an excerpt of this book at

http://web.njit.edu/~isa/articles.html

The book by Fathi Yakun "To be a Muslim" is also a short booklet and actually came long before 'Agenda to change our condition'. The book addresses the issues faced by Islamic movements. It is also an excellent book to read since it focuses on the 'spiritual emptiness' of the islamic movements that led them to failure.

I personally feel that both books should be a 'must read' for a Muslim to keep the balance between activism and spirituality.

thanks for the replies! I read the excerpt from the link, and i really liked it! I went and ordered the books, so inshallah they should come this week. Hopefully they'll come after my last final, otherwise i'll have to practice some mad will power to not sit down and read the whole thing!  ;D

I just read To be a Muslim recently.  I'd probably give it 4 stars (out of 5).  The only flaw that I saw in it was a lack of detail.  The book is too small.  It covers *many* very essential topics, many of which you can write separate books on.  Basically, it's a manual.  Take it as that.  Perhaps an intro to what being a Muslim is all about (emphasis on the word all).

I'd agree with ahmer though, that everyone should probably have that book in their home library.

Assalamu'alaikum,

Sis, if you read Arabic, I'd suggest that you purchase the original book of Fathi Yakan's. Or if you do read Malay/ Indonesian ;) do get that. It certainly is a better translation than the English one.

I feel that the English version is very abridged and too skimpy, and somehow, takes a lot of the spirit away.

Nevertheless, it's still a good basic book to read, especially if you're invloved in da'wah work, inshaAllah.

Allahua'lam :-)

Ayesha, yes, Hadele has been telling me alll about the *wonderful* halaqa that you sisters have going on! That's where i got the idea to get the books from  ;D  Inshallah i really want to come, so i'm hoping after boards are over and done with! :-/

I started reading both of them, it's been hard to keep myself from taking a 2 hour study break and just sitting down and reading them in one felswoop, but i like what i've read so far. except at the beginning of the hamza yusuf one, he seems a little "anti-american" w/ how he thinks nike's are ugly shoes...but he does have a point w/ how it's better to "get back to basics".
