This may seem a bit of a stupid question, but this discussion has come up with peopel in the past.

Is it haraam to urinate standing up?

Dr. Siddiqui (former ISNA president) said:

The preferred way of passing urine is to do it in the sitting position. Urine is Najas (unclean) and it should not touch the body or the clothes. After urination one should wash one's self or should dry oneself thoroughly with paper. Urination in the standing position may soil the clothes or the body. However, if a person is sick and cannot sit down, or the place is unclean, then it is allowed to urinate in the standing position also. There are a number of Ahadith reported by Imam Bukhari, Muslim and others that indicate that the Prophet -peace be upon him- once came to an unclean place (subatah) and he urinated in the standing position. Some scholars of Hadith say that the Prophet -peace be upon him- had pain in his leg at that time. This shows that urination in the standing position is permissible only in the case of some excuse, otherwise, the proper position is the sitting position.

If any parts of the body or clothes had urine on them, they should be washed, whether the urine is wet or it has dried up. If the urine was on the ground and the sun made it dry, then washing of the ground is not necessary. Any clothes that touch the wet urine clothes should also be washed.

People in the West do not care very much about urine. Many do not even wash their hands when they come out of the bathrooms. Islam teaches us extra care in this matter. For us it is a matter of hygiene, good health as well as our Taharah. Our prayers are not valid, if our body and clothes are not very clean. We should be thankful to Allah that he guided us even in these simple things.

Since this thread is for BROTHERS only, I'll tell ma boyz  a true story...

Once I was working at this motor place and I went to the urinals/bathroom/toilet.

I always use the toilet, and wash some tissue paper with water and then close the door behind me and then relief myself.
So there I am doing my own business when I hear this guy coming in and his singing a tune and whistling away.
Now as I open the door I see him standing up and urinating standing up and to my horror not only is he urinating but he is also having a bar of Twix(chocolate in the other). I walked over to the taps and started to wash mee hands and then this dude zips his trousers up, shifts the chocolate to the other hand that was used for assisting his relief and walks out of the bathroom whistling his tune. Sick or what eh!

hanif

I made a mental note never to shake the dudes hand whatever happened....!

Urine is sterile. It cannot harm you through bacteria or other.

Dang BroHanif thats similar to what I just  witnessed the other day at work.

I'm washing my hands and theres some dude doing his 'bit'.....zips up....and then walks out! Without washing! And if that wasn't bad enough, to my horror on his way out he had his finger in his mouth, picking away at some food particle or whatever!!! Now if that isn't sick, tell me what is?! Well anyway me and my colleges had a good laugh about him afterwards heehee ;D

Now heres the bombshell. That guy is from the *Microbiology* section of the Pharmacy  :o Some people just never learn.

Some advice to all bros using work/public toilets: *Never* open the doors with your bare hands. Always have a tissue as a barrier. I'm extremely obsessive about hygeine in that respect that sometimes I don't even try to breathe in those places (not with much luck though)

"Urine is sterile. It cannot harm you through bacteria or other"

Anonymous, that is not actually true is it? Urine causes an illness (cannot remeber its name) which is pretty serious. Urine is not sterile, if it was, why dont surgeons just urinate on thier hands before operating?

Also, why do all medical facilities and resturants etc tell workers to wash hands after going to urinate?

Similar to what the others have mentioned, i've often seen men just walk stright out the toilet without washing their hands!!! How aweful! They were their flashy suits, have their hair gelled back, carry briefcases, yet dont even have basic toilet training! :o

LOL :D haha
Mujaahid just don't tell that to hindu doctors, we already know what some do with it!

Urine contains nitrogenous compounds which are toxic to the body so I guess thats part of the reason. The other reasons.....er I don't really know to explain with the right language.... :-[ I'll leave that for someone else

assalaamu alaikum

There are some comments on this thread that i'm shocked that brothers would be making in this public forum. Frankly, there is an issue of having haya too.

Don't be so naive to think that a [BROTHERS/SISTERS ONLY] marking will stop prying eyes from the opposite sex from reading your comments.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Urine is not as sterile as you think because of the contamination of the urine by the large number of bacteria at the perineal region.

Some men think it is "unmanly" to urinate while sitting.  I say it is unbecoming of a man to deny Allah's  subhana wa ta ala commandments.  If Allah subhana wa ta ala doesn't want urine on my clothes when I pray (or at any other time for that matter), then I'm going to do everything in my power to keep urine off me.  If that means sitting down, then I'll sit.  I'd rather be called "unmanly" by "boys" (notice I didn't say men)  then deny Allah subhana wa ta ala.
