Concept of Honor in Islam?

Assalaamu alaikum,  Could someone please explain to me the concept of "honor" in Islam (or among Muslims, as the case may be)? I find it a little troublesome, and it seems to be coming up frequently of late, especially in the brothers' section.                                              Thanks very much,                                                                 a convert sister
