| Greetings to the Sirs and Madames who have greeted me with such generosity and profound hospitality. Every day I find something... in you... of you...that enriches my life. If you will indulge me, I would like to address you for a moment. We are fast approaching the "Memorial Day" holiday, and I expect that its celebration and "ceremony" will be such as has not been seen in decades. I know very well that this holiday will have a particularly solemn climate and I do not wish to make light of anyone's pain or loss by arguing that it should be anything less... Nevertheless, I also suspect that there will be a fair amount of unkindness in word and deed which will accompany the day, as many seek to perpetuate their anger by continuing to direct it unjustly towards the entire nation of Islam. In the past few months, I have heard words proceed from the mouths of men whom I once dared to call my "countrymen;" shameful words that made me gape in wonderment. I have seen actions taken by my "fellow" Americans which had no part in the expression of my beliefs. Sometimes I feel like a "stranger in a strange land" (Heinlein, 1962.) But I know that I am not. In the words of Patrick Henry, (1775,) "I know not what course other men may take," but until they engage me, they do not represent me, and should the Day's remembrances cause you any offense, I do hope that you will bear this in mind. | Dear Addison, Thank you. It was very kind of you to write that. I'm glad you felt comfortable enough to do so. I'm sure what you said is true, that there will be a lot of anger ignorantly unjustly directed towards Muslims and Islam. However, it's reassuring to know that there are also many many people who feel the same way you do, and I think over time the number will increase as people start to realize they need to have more knowledge before making judgments. mariam :-) |
