in monday local paper, says from "hartford courant".. Lucas Helder isn't the typical terrorist. Helder, 21, has admitted to police that he constructed 24 pipe bombs and placed 18 in mail boxes from Illinois to Colorado. His rationale? He wanted to set them where they would form a smiley face on the map of the United States. By the time he was caught (and subsequently photographed grinning and laughing), Helder had completed the smiley face's eyes and part of its mouth whit the bombs he placed mailboxes in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, and Colorado. The smiley face was created in the early 1960s by Harvey Ball after State Mutual Life Assurance in Worcester, Conn., took over another insurance company, creating a hostile work environment. After a State Mutual vice president suggested a 'friendship campaign" to improve morale, Ball, an advertising executive, created the smiley-face button. From there the smiley face's popularity spread. Now there's the overexposed e-mail emoticon made ubiquitous by AOL :-). |
