Asalaam aleykum Most of us are probably familiar with the Sunday schools conducted all across the western world in various masjids. I am starting to volunteer my time to help out the children at my local masjid and have noticed very disturbing things. It seems that the masjid administration doesn't really care about the school that much. Maybe I'm wrong but that is my initial impression. It is very disorganized and lacks funding. This is such a travesty because our children are our future. If we fail to teach them true Islam then we not only fail them and ourselves but we fail the whole world and Allah (subhana wa ta ala). Anyway, enough complaining. I am wondering if any of you have experience operating a Sunday school and could give me some tips on how to better organize the program. Do you know of any resources, whether they be online, books, or other publications which might aid me in teaching children the beauty of Islam? The children I am dealing with are very young, about kindergarten age. I know children of that age are distracted easily and need a lot of hands on type of learning. Any help you can provide would be great. Jazak Allah for any help. |

[slm] What makes or breaks any Sunday School type class is the teachers and parents. Parents because they need to get their children there on time and teach their kids to be respectful. Teachers make alot more of a difference than administrators! They are the ones who will be enthusiastic (or not), Have great lesson plans- with hands on or creative learning, and unfortuantely- usually dodnate all the materials. Teachers can make it inspite of the admin. The children will want to come because of the teacher. A teacher is the one who makes the difference. Let her/him teach about what they feel passionate about. There is so much to learn in Islam- from religion to history- to day to day living. Find the areas the kids will be interested in- as you won't be able to teach all that needs to be taught. In my opinion the main objective of a once a week class for kids- is to help them develop a love and passion for learning about Islam. What you teach is not as important as getting them to come, socialize and find their religion cool! My recommendation- is pick your teachers carefully- the requirements are a lot different than a weekly class. Take advantage of this and get the kids to the Masjid! |

[slm] www.islam4kids.com http://arabesq.com/educate/lesson.html#Islamic http://www.submission.org/YES/child2.html http://www.islamicgarden.com/page1002.html I agree with the post so far that emphasise on the importance of the teacher. The kids don't know what is going on in the background so you as a teacher should give it 100%! Don't be afraid to tell the admin about your frustrations but do this with wisdom and change the system with patience. The best way is to set up a curriculum and Insha'Allah you'll be fine!
