11 embrace Islam in RAK

Ras Al Khaimah

Eleven people of different nationalities have embraced Islam since the beginning of this year, said a senior official.

"Eight women and three men have come to the Department of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf to declare they have become new Muslims," said Sheikh Omar bin Abdul Aziz Al Qasimi, who heads the department in Ras Al Khaimah.

Five of the 11 are Filipinos, three from Sri Lanka, two from India and one from Kazakhstan. All are housemaids working for UAE nationals.

Sheikh Omar said the 11 sponsors of the converts told the department that the reason behind their conversion to Islam was the nice treatment they had received from their sponsors. "In acting so, sponsors have motivated their maids to convert to Islam," he said.

Sheikh Omar also announced that under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, the imams of mosques have been instructed to pray for the victory of the Palestinians in the occupied territories.

Sheikh Saqr's ordered that imams dedicate special prayers each day after Al Magreb and Isha prayers for the victory of their brothern in Palestine.

Sheikh Omar also said the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf met 200 imams to inform them about new guidelines issued recently by the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf.

He said the imams will be holding lectures every day on different subjects including the importance of dressing neatly when they come to mosques and on ensuring that they don't have bad smell.

"It had been noticed of late, he said, that some Muslims come to the mosque wearing pyjamas, and this was against the code of conduct, and contravened the teachings of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

He also said that there have been complaints that some people eat onion and garlic before coming to prayers and this causes discomfort to others praying nearby. "It was preferable not to eat such things before coming to pray. One of the key Islamic principles behind group praying," he explained.

Yet others, he pointed out, leave their mobile phones turned on while praying, the ringing of which breaks the concentration of others.

On complaints about the imams themselves, Sheikh Omar said some elderly people who attend mosque prayers have grumbled that the imams usually read a lot from the Holy Quran.

He stated that all imams had been given instructions to reduce the verses read from the Holy Quran in the prayers and to always use the short verses. The objective of this, he explained, was to make it easy for those who attend, particularly the aged, who cannot stand for prolonged periods

assalaamu alaikum

I hope it doesn't mean only 11 in the whole country. If so, its a right disgrace. Why, there are more people taking the shahada in the US & UK than in the UAE.

wAllahu a'lam.

[slm],

That UAE is a majority muslim country might have something to do with the low number. But in anycase, we shouldn't be interested too much in the quantity, but in quality  ;-)  and create a community support structure for muslims. Quite a few muslims leave islam after coming to it.

Wassalam
