Can we eat chinese food?

I like eating chinese and japanese food.
I know we are allowed to eat food made by the people of the Book as long as it's not pork, but what about chinese food? Coz most chinese don't really have any religion or it's not apparent what their religion are. I think they have chickens and ducks cut according to their way? Not too sure. What about Japanese food (not sushi, but the lunch/dinner set, etc).

While I'm at it, are fast foods (KFC, etc) alright to eat?
Thanks!

Chinese are Buddhists.  Not all of them, but a lot of them are, at least around here (NY) they are.  But there are something like 30 million Chinese Muslims.  There are also Chinese converts to Islam here in the States.  There is a Chinese language masjid right here in Chinatown in NY, tucked away among the Chinese groceries and Buddhist temples.

I don't know if you can really trust most Chinese food in the States.  Have you ever seen those news shows that go undercover in Chinese restaurants?  Enough to turn you off to Lo Mein for quite some time.  Also, Chinese dishes contain a LOT of pork, AND they do not necessarily clean the wok or grill if they're cooking your chicken fried rice after whipping up a batch of pork fried rice.  There are halal, kosher, glatt kosher, and vegetarian Chinese restaurants around... why not ask around to find out if there's one in your area?

I don't know about Japanese food, fish or meat.  They too, tend to be Buddhists or Shintoists, or a combination thereof.

Well, aside from issues surrounding who is slaughtering the meat, what did the animal eat while it was alive, did the feed contain animal parts and byproducts as it often does, etc etc., there are also issues of animal and worker cruelty to consider when purchasing from one of these places.  I would pick up a copy of 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser to get a peek into how fast food is made, what happens to the cows and chickens, how farmers and ranchers are treated by the AgriBusiness conglomerates and fast food companies, and how minimum wage workers and franchisees are exploited before my next meal at BK.

There are several issues involved here.  The first matter is the issue of the meat.  Is it permissible to eat?   Is it zabiha, is it slaughtered by the people of the book, machine shocking, atheists, other non-muslims, etc.   I'm not going to get into a discussion on this point, we've discussed it before on this board, and its best to check with a local scholar that you trust and follow to determine if that meat is permissible to eat.

Another issue is, can we eat food prepared by non-muslims (including those that aren't christians or jews)?

Sheikh Munajjid was asked this question and his response follows:

Can Muslims eat in restaurants owned and directed by people who are not worshipping Allah? For example, Chinese restaurants. Keeping in mind that the type of food in these places is not HARAM in itself but the people making this food are KOFFAR.

Answer:

Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah). There is no objection for a Muslim to eat from food that a kaafir (unbeliever), whether polytheist or otherwise, has cooked, as the issue of cooking does not involve slaughtering according to Islamic guidelines so that we would require the person to be from ahl il-kitaab (People of the Book) among the kuffar. In fact, it is only a matter of cooking, so the only issues that concern us are cleanliness and the avoidance of najasa (impurity), and likewise that nothing haram (forbidden) is mixed with the food such as khamr (wine or alcoholic beverages) or lard.

May Allah protect us from harm, evil and the things he has forbidden (al-muharramaat).

;======================

Finally another issue to consider is what is the meat cooked in?  Lard?  Wine?
