I was reading an article about dates and it mentioned the following hadith.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood 3894      Narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin
My mother intended to make me fat to send me to the (house of) the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). But nothing which he desired benefited me till she gave me cucumber with fresh dates to eat. Then I became fat as good (as she desired).

;--------

The article also said one kilogram of dates contains nearly 3,000 calories which alone are sufficient to supply the minimum daily requirements of an active man for one full day.

brother reg,

it's absolutely a blessing "in diguise"!  bro bhaloo is completely correct about the high calorie usefulness of dates for someone who wants increased weight.  there are few foods as compact, and portable - meaning, essentially "no refrigeration required" :) , sort of.

i could provide you with a choice of some very specific foods to eat, and a few timing strategies, if you like.

i have to log out right now, but i'll check back here later today sometime.

(i might have to send the suggestions privately ;) , since they're going to sound overwhelmingly inappropriate for anyone else......and my goal would not be to induce envy or food desire...)

Reg if you wanna gain weight then my first bit of advice would be stay AWAY from ALL supplements, Protein Powders, Creatine, Steriods etc! They are bad news!!

I used to take creatine and it left me bloated and dehydrated. I used to take protien drinks, but they made me bloated and chubby! They do help you gain weight, but they also have a lot of side affects, one of them being you feel bloated and uncomfortable and keep having to go to the toilet every few minutes to urinate!

They work, but they work in ways you dont want.

My advice is lift meduim to heavy weights, 3 or 4 times a week, and do high repititions.

If you like, i'll post you my workout i used to use to bulk up really quick?

Always remeber though, only train one body part once a week, or else you'll overtrain which will mean you wont put on any muscle.

Also, eat loads of natural foods, mostly chicken and potatoes and pasta.

If you stick to this, it will take a few months to notice any weight gains, but they will come. It takes time. Take a picture of yourself now (topless) and then take another in six months time and compare the two!

C'mon man bro reg if you are a bro the best way and fastest way to gain weight is to get married. Yep thats right marrige, that way you'll be fatten up in no time.
Remember b4 you got married you had the six pack and you looked toned, well once you get married the wife will try and make you have a couch pack and make you nice, round and golaby so no other sister will look at you. Trust me man, I know enough brothers who were built like a fridge but now they seem to have gained more around the waist than on the arms.

Marrige, think about it.

HAHAH, man that's hillarious.

Although believe it or not I have heard of the complete opposite, whereby the guy gets married and actually looses weight  ???

Depends on eating habits etc I guess, metabolism biological makeup etc.

Hey I'm starting to sound a lot like the Doctor here ... wonder what happened to that chap ;)

Reg, I must caution to be very careful when taking advice on gaining weight, working out, and getting in shape.

While there are general principles that are fairly universal for everyone, there are plenty of other techniques that will work great for some but not for others.  For example, some people don't get results with protein shakes and supplements.  Okay, but many others DO get results from these tools.

I'm betting you have an ectomorphic body type.  Basically ectomorphic body types are thin, have a high metabolism (causing the trouble with gaining weight), slow muscle growth, generally flat chest, little body fat, generally good muscle definition, and many times they have a young appearance.

There are several things you can do.  First is the fundamental truth of calorie intake.  In order to gain weight, you must take in more calories than you burn every day.  So your first plan of attack is to eat, eat, and eat.

You are going to take in massive amounts of calories.  I don't mean eating cakes and cookies either.  I'm talking about clean calories high in protein and carbohydrates.  Since you will also be lifting weights (more on this later) you will need to eat at least one gram of protein per pound of body weight every day!  This is A LOT of protein.  Along with the protein, throw in plenty of vegetables, fruits, and carbohydrates like pastas, potatoes, rice, etc.  Also, start taking a daily vitamin and mineral pill to fill in any gaps in your nutrition on a day to day basis.

As a thin guy wanting to get bigger, you are going to need to eat almost on a constant basis.  And since you will be taking in so much protein, you will need to drink plenty of water.  I can't stress enough the importance of water.  Your body needs water to function properly.  Stay hydrated!  Your urine should be almost clear or clear.

After diet comes working out.  You want to gain weight but you don't want to be unhealthy and have a bunch of extra fat.  So you need to start lifting weights.  There are many resources available online and in bookstores concerning this subject.  Also, if you have someone around you familiar with weightlifting, ask them for advice.  Also, read, read, read, and read some more on the subject..

BUT I CAUTION YOU!!! Be careful of the advice you take!  Not everything works for everybody and many people out there THINK they know what they are talking about when in fact they could get you hurt.  Again, read, read, and read some more.  If something isn't working for you, try something else.  I'll give you some general outlines.

Warm up before, during, and after lifting heavy weights.

Also know this, your muscles aren't being built up when you lift weights.  You are actually tearing your muscles down while partaking in these activities.  The growth process actually happens when your body has a chance to rest.  So get good sleep every night.  Work out hard and rest well.  Generally you need about twenty four to forty eight hours of rest after working a particular muscle group, sometimes more, sometimes less.  It varies from person to person.  Forty eight hours is a good rule of thumb.

I'll give you an example.

Monday-Chest/Triceps
Tuesday-Back/Biceps
Wednesday-Legs
Thursday-Chest/Triceps
Friday-Back/Biceps
Saturday-Legs or Rest
Sunday-Rest

Or here is another example.  This one doesn't fit well with a seven day schedule so I extended it to show you how it would work.

Monday-Chest
Tuesday-Back
Wednesday-Legs
Thursday-Triceps
Friday-Biceps
Saturday-Rest
Sunday-Chest
Monday-Back
Tuesday-Legs
Wednesday-Triceps
Thursday-Biceps
Friday-Rest
Saturday-Chest
Sunday-Back
AND SO ON AND SO ON

These examples are by no means written in stone.  They are just examples for you.  Feel free to modify them to fit your own needs.  Also, abdominal exercises are essential.  Some people work them every day but I prefer every other day or five times a week with two days of rest.

Cardiovascular exercise is also good for you.  Seeing how you are trying to gain weight, I would limit cardio workouts to about thirty minutes a day, three days a week.  Again, this is just my opinion as I don't know you personally and only you can figure out what is right for you.

Developing a strong healthy body from scratch isn't an overnight process.  It takes time and patience is a virtue.  I've given you some simple advice which might help you to get started.  Again I stress caution whenever you start altering your diet, working out, and changing your body composition.  Be safe, eat well, work hard, rest well, drink water, read everything you can on the subject, and take advice with a grain of salt.

Great stuff there brother, but one question. Can a person who has an ectomorphic build take on a more 'natural' shape, or is it something that is basically in the genes?

Good question.  I am no expert and I can only comment utilizing my own experiences in this subject.  I can tell you this, there is no way for an ectomorph to become absolutely huge like Arnold Swar......(whatever his name is).  But I have seen ectomorphs transform their bodies from basically twigs to what the western world would call.....studs, forgive the expression.

For many people it can be done.  But the ectomorphic body is inherently slow when it comes to muscle growth so it may take a little longer and you may need to work a little harder at it.  This is not saying ectomorphs are weak.  I knew guys who weighed seventy pounds less than me but were just as strong.  They just didn't look it.

To "fill out" you need to have the right combination of diet and exercise but yes, for many people it can be done.......just expect your food bill to skyrocket.   :)

Thanks again. Perhaps mwishka can also add some comments to this.

Anyhow, you reminded me of one of these American talk shows i watched some years ago (before the days of Jerry Springer). I think it was Sally Jessy Raphael, and it basically about people who were the nerdiest of geeks in school (in appearance), and who had undergone a quite amazing transformations and wanted to reunite with old friends who used to stick up for them in the face of bullies. And there was one guy whose school photo showed him to have been really geeky but since then he had put on weight and muscle, and even joined the marines. The transfomation as i said was quite incredible.

Thanks again.

Alhamdullilah, I'm glad I can help out in any way.  I don't claim to be an expert but I'm no stranger to being fit either.  Insha'allah, my advice will help you and other muslims.  If you have any questions feel free to instant message me on AIM.  That goes for anybody.

brothers,

i've written to bro reg, and will perhaps come back here to share with you some of what i recommended to him, and to add a few miscellaneous comments here.  but, though i have general recommendations for working out, as i told him, i'm glad to see specifics here from brothers who do weight work - that i can't advise on....

Dirt, that workout is too much! You should only need to train 3 times a week! Everyday and your not only gona put on NO muscle, but your gona get ill, and damage your immune system.

You only need to trian each body part once a week at most. Any more often, and it wont grow, and will look flimsy and weak!!

I used to train like crazy and i would always be ill, and put on little muscle. It was only when i started training LESS, that i actually noticed the gains!

Also, too much weights and you'll move like a robot  :o Not a good idea for a fighter!!

Working out only three times a week may work for you but it doesn't work for everybody.  Take a close look at the workout schedule I provided, in particular, the second one.

Monday-Chest
Tuesday-Back
Wednesday-Legs
Thursday-Triceps
Friday-Biceps
Saturday-Rest
Sunday-Chest
Monday-Back
Tuesday-Legs
Wednesday-Triceps
Thursday-Biceps
Friday-Rest
Saturday-Chest
Sunday-Back
AND SO ON AND SO ON

By isolating each muscle group you are getting AT LEAST SIX DAYS OF REST after training the specific muscle groups, AT LEAST 48-72 HOURS OF REST concerning secondary muscle groups, and AT LEAST ONE FULL DAY OF REST during a seven day period (and you can modify it to get TWO full days of rest in a seven day period, more on this later).

Let me give you an example.

Monday--Chest.  So it's monday and you worked out your chest and you feel good.  Your triceps get a small secondary workout as well do the nature of biomechanics, it's inevitable.  When you work out the chest you must push objects away, well, your triceps are also a pushing muscle and as such are also worked.  But your triceps are only recieving a secondary workout, meaning they are not being targeted specifically for training.  Your chest is the muscle group being primarily being worked.

Tuesday--Back.  Now it's tuesday and it's been twenty four hours since your chest workout.  Your chest muscles are feeling sore but that's okay because you won't be using your chest muscles today.  Today's focus will be on the back.   You complete your back muscle workout and your biceps recieve a secondary workout as well, again due to the nature of biomechanics only this time instead of pushing like the chest and triceps, your back and biceps are muscles which pull.

Wednesday--Legs.  It has been 48 hours since you worked out your chest and the soreness has dissipated.  Now is a leg workout (which many people neglect, by the way).  You finish the leg workout and go home.

Thursday--Triceps.  It has been 72 hours (three days) since you recieved A SECONDARY workout for your triceps way back on Monday during your chest workout.  The average body needs about 24-72 hours of rest to recover between workouts.  Some people need more, some less.  It depends on your body.  In my experience, I have never seen people need more than 72 hours of rest unless there were extenuating circumstances.  So now you work out your triceps.

Friday--Biceps.  It has been 72 hours since you recieved A SECONDARY workout for your biceps on Tuesday during your back routine.  More than enough rest for many people.

Saturday--A full day of rest and recovery lets your body relax completely.

Sunday--Chest.  Now it's time to start over with chest again.  Note that it has been SIX DAYS since your last chest workout.  Since you will be recieving a secondary workout on your triceps today, take a look at how long it has been since your tricep workout....that's right 72 hours of rest since you last pushed your triceps.

For me, and many more people who train this routine, and variations of it, work out amazingly well.  You can modify it so instead of starting over on the seventh day (in this case, Sunday), you use the seventh day for another rest and recovery day along with day six.  That would leave you with at least 48-72 HOURS of rest between secondary muscle groups, at least SEVEN DAYS of rest between major muscle groups, and TWO FULL DAYS of rest per week.

Just because you might feel this routine overworks YOUR BODY doesn't mean it will overwork everyone's.  Take me for example, this workout is a pretty good routine for my body.  I'm not saying you're weak, I'm just saying what I've always stressed, not everything is written in stone.  What works for some, may not work for others.

Also, concerning loss of flexibility.  I highly doubt anyone with an ectomorphic body type will get big enough to lose any significant flexibility.  The idea that you lose flexibility when you weight train is somewhat of a myth.  The person who trains with weights, maintains a healthy diet, stretches on a regular basis, and trains their motor coordination skills will not lose any significant flexibility.....UNLESS they start creeping into professional body builder size.  But to get this huge, you need the genetics (which ectomorphs don't have), the training (in most cases, years), and normally a regime of steroids.  For the average ectomorph these conditions are almost impossible to meet.

After everything I just said, let me say a few last things.  It is most definitely possible to overtrain your body.  I've been guilty of it myself.  Many people who have any experience with weight training are guilty of it.  But the workout plans I mentioned are NOT overtaxing to many people.  If anyone uses these templates as their routine and find they are being overworked, feel free to change it up.  Also bear in mind that this is where your diet plays a HUGE role.  If you aren't eating right, you will not be able to maintain a vigorous workout routine as well as someone who IS eating right.  Most beginners don't eat nearly enough protein when working with heavy weights....just something to think about.
