Quote:
What is the brother of death?

The Brother of death is sleep.

Dr. Arther J. Allison, of Oxford University proved that death occurs when Allah withdraws the Soul from the human body. Sleep and death are one single process, when one goes into a deep sleep something goes out of the body, but that something does not return upon death.

His finding are confirmed by the Quran Surah 39:42 (Al-Zumar) which says:

It is Allah that takes
the souls (of man) at death;
And those that die not
(He takes) during their sleep.
Those on whom He
Has passed the decree
Of death, He keeps back
(from returning to life);
But the rest, He sends
(To their bodies)
For a term appointed.

What this is saying, is that when we go into a deep sleep, the soul exits the body and returns upon awakening. In death the soul does not return. In poetic imagery it is said, Sleep is the (twin)-brother of death.

Congratulations all participants... and even if you didn't get this question right... no need to worry their are 6 questions left!!!!!!!!! and if you can get all of those and someone misses more later one you'll be a contender still!!! So good luck and see you next time on .................

Here is my answer for the first question

It is God who takes the souls (of man) at death and
those who die not ( He takes) during their sleep. Those on
whom He has passed the decree of death, He keeps back
(from returning to life); but the rest, He sends back to their
bodies for a term appointed.

What this is saying, is that when we go into a deep sleep, the
soul exits the body and returns upon awakening. In death the
soul does not return. In poetic imagery it is said, Sleep is the
twin-brother of death.

My answer for the first question is

Be in this world as if you are a traveller, a passerby, with your clothes and shoes full of dust. Sometimes you sit under the shade of a tree, sometimes you walk in the desert. Be always a passerby, for this is not home.

ummm what exactly is the answer? and is this your final answer?

What came to my mind as I read the question was the Hadith in which our beloved Prophet   <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/saw.gif> spoke about the dangers of the in-laws intermingling in close quarters; for example, the sister of a man's wife staying in close proxmity to him all by themselves or the wife staying closer to the huusband's brother in a seculded area which will prompt them to indulge in prohibited practices. The in-laws are referred to as death.

Here is a version of the Hadith from Bukhari:

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 159:
Narrated 'Uqba bin 'Amir:
Allah's Apostle said, "Beware of entering upon the ladies." A man from the Ansar said, "Allah's Apostle! What about Al-Hamu the in-laws of the wife (the brothers of her husband or his nephews etc.)?" The Prophet replied: The in-laws of the wife are death itself.

So, my answer to the question is:

The brother of death is the brother of the husband or
The sister death is the sister of the wife

I do not know if your question relates to something else   <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/cheesy.gif>

At the moment, what I have given is the only answer I can think of with my very limited knowledge. If I come across any other before the closing date, I will forward it to you, Insha Allah.

Sleep is called the brother of death by many philosophers.
I couldn't find Islamic sources that called it the "brother" of death, but it is called the "lesser death"  or compared to death in:39:42

Is this late?  I can't figure out if it is midnight the beginning of Friday or the end of Friday.  Sorry.

Sleep is the brother of death. FINAL ANSWER! That's a pretty interesting family. <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/wink.gif>

I heard a saying but not sure of its authenticity, so i will just mention the saying and not mention who it was attributed to.

"Sleep is the brother of death. The dying man sees himself in his true character, and so knows whether or not he is, by repentance, freed from his ruling passion of life. In like manner, he will see himself during his slumbers, still following in the path of his passions"

Well, I don't know, my mind is not working these days <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/sad.gif>

When is the deadline, you already posting the current scores!!

Hmm, okay I thought about the advice the prophet <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/saw.gif> gave about brother-in-laws (sister-in-laws) saying that they are like death. But shouldn't the question for that be "who is the brother of death?"

I dunno. Alright, this is my final answer. What is the Brother of death: husband's brother alone with his wife. Here is the Hadith that mentions this:

Book 026, Number 5400: (Sahih Muslim)
'Uqba b. Amir reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Beware of getting, into the houses and meeting women (in seclusion). A person from the Ansir said: Allah's Messenger, what about husband's brother, whereupon he said: Husband's brother is like death.

I know I am late.  It was really and trully unavoidable.  Just wanna answer though I know my answer won't be tabulated even if I was right (not that I will get it right).

The brother to death is sleep.  Some Sufis hold that maxim so true that they would refrain from sleeping for days at end.  The lack of sleep helps to alse "deaden" your nafs which the Sufis think is an important part of their suluk.

[slm]

I must protest here at the answers given by Br. Asim and Br. Abu Atheek, because they are both *wrong*  :P

If we do follow the logic that they are carrying, then the answer *should* be "the brother of the brother-in-law" (or alternatively, "the sister of the sister-in-law).

The in-laws themselves are described as "death" in the hadith.  You asked not for who "death" was, but who the *brother* (or sister) of death was.  So that would be the brother (or sister) of the husband's brother (or wife's sister).

What's interesting is when there is only one in-law!  In that case, the brother of death for the wife is her own husband :o  (and similarly, the sister of death for the husband is her own wife).

I'm telling you man, this whole logic is weird for this question.  So, I repeat, Asim and Abu Atheek should have a zero at this point.  I'm sure others will agree, right??

;)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Hey! We are supposed to obey those in authority :) Regis gave very good explanations for accepting our answers: the question WAS pretty abstract and it DOES answer the question and it IS from islamic sources.

Just read the answers that were given... sayings of some philosophers, used in poetry, sufis tradition... umm, personally I keep far away from these sources. Remember the universal refutation of (non-Islmic) philosophy: That is what YOU say. Well, I can be a philosopher as well and say, unconciousness is the brother of death, sleep is the isotope of death, or a multitude of such variations.

Regarding your point that our reasoning is illogical, have you heard the titles: well of death, hall of fame, prison of death, etc.  Similarly, brother of death can be considered as a title of a person. To reduce ambiguity the question should have been phrased as: What is the twin-brother to death?

BTW Abu Hamza where have you been ? Haven't seen a post from you for a while... and when you did come out of hiding, you post a protest, tsk, tsk... :)
