Last night I was at one of those desi parties and I was talking to an anti there. She said some interesting things like with the way things are post september 11th you shouldnt discuss religion because it could ultimately have negative consequences for your life, career etc.  I havent experienced a lot of discrimination but I was curious to know what some of y'alls thoughts might be. ???

I would disagree, and say there are more reasons now to discuss religion.  More people have negative preconceptions about Islam and they need to be addressed. Also more people have taken an interest in Islam and have questions, and boards like this give people a chance to ask.
Like urslef i haven't received much discrimination but i hear of brothers and sisters who have and still do, which is more of a reason to do dawah and explain Islam to others. We live in a world were many (but not all) believe things they have read or heard on the news, alot of which is negative . from doing dawah and even through our daily actions, hopefully we can show Islam in its true form, inshallah.
I understand peoples concern that discussing Islam could affect their life, career etc but does that mean we should live with that and not address any of the issues people present to us. I'm not saying that u should thrust Islam on each and every person that u meet bcos not everyone os interested.  But is there any harm in answering peoples genuine questions and guiding them in the best way we can? Bcos if we don't more people will come across discrimination in some form or another because of peoples lack of knowledge or ignorance.
Plus we should have out trust and faith in Allah (SWT) to provide for us and thank Him for what we have, whether we be living in life of luxury or not.
Speaking good about Islam may not in some cases give us a comfortable life in this world but lets remember the rewards of the next life, inshallah
May Allah guide us and keep us on the straight path and help us to attain Jannah Al Firdous, ameen.

Just my two cents (or should i say 'my couple of pence') ;)

There is a saying - the worst fear is the fear of the unknown.

I think there are alot of people out there who want to know about Islam.

I understand your aunti's comments about career.  Normally I would say- don't talk politics or religion at work. However, due to most Muslims foreign appearances and/or dress- people have propbably started to wonder about you at work.

Dispell the rumors. Talk! You and they will be glad you did. It goes without saying- to choose your words very carefully.
