Assalamu alaikum wa rahmat Allah wa barkatUh.

Dear brothers and sisters in Islaam,

We write to you today on behalf of a group of people very close to your hearts and ours. These people live in many different countries, speak many different languages, and lead very different lives. They do have one thing in common though - they are the people you are responsible for helping; with your wealth, time and efforts. They are the refugees, the disenfranchised, and the persecuted.

There will be, insha'Allah, an event designed to raise money for some of these people and to increase awareness of the the injustices to which they have been subjected. Why Palestine, India, Iraq and Chechnya? Keep reading and find out.

Palestine

Palestinians have over the past half century become the victims of numerous injustices. Currently, approximately 4 million (according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency) live as refugees. Not only have they been deprived of their homes and means of livelihood, but they have continued to be victims of aggression. Since September 29th, 2000 more than 1,200 palestinians have been killed and 20,000 injured in the ongoing violence.

India

Minorities in the province of Gujarat, India have become the victims of riots and mob violence witnessed and assisted by state authorities. More than 850 people have been killed since February 27, 2002, unofficial estimates put the death toll as high as 2,000. Government figures indicate that more than 98,000 people, overwhelmingly Muslim, are residing in over one hundred newly created relief camps throughout the state.

Iraq

The citizens of Iraq continue to suffer the effects of the Gulf War, the ongoing bombing campaigns and the draconian embargo. Over the past twelve years more than 1.5 million Iraqi men, women and children have died as a result of the situation. Iraqi children continue to die at a rate of 150-200 every day because of circumstances related to contaminated water, malnutrition and the shortage of medication.

Chechnya

The Chechens have become the victims of ongoing violence ever since they declared independence in 1991. The Russian invasion in 1994 - 1996 claimed  lives of about 80,000 people, left half a million mines on a territory of 6,000 square miles and crippled thousands of innocent civilians in concentration camps. The current conflict which is still underway has resulted in more 500,000 refugees and more than 48,000 civilian deaths. It is expected that the combination of the two conflicts has left more than 26,000 orphans.
