I have 2 questions

   My first question is:

Well, first I better explain my situation.  I am a 26 year old single Afrikan-American Muslim male who has been within the fold of Islam close to a decade now.  My problem is, even though financially I know I'm not really ready, but mentally and spiritually I know I am ready to get married.  (Or at least meet potential sisters for marriage.  I have much to learn about Islam (as do we all), but I do feel at least somewhat knowledgeable, so I know I'll make  a good husband.  My  question is how do I go about meeting or even approaching a sister with the intent of proposal.  I would like to get to know her first, so I'm not looking to rush into anything, it's just meeting sisters.  I do know some brothers here (in Minnesota), but I admit our relationships should be closer, and I am working on that, but as far as sisters, I don't know.

My second problem and question is:

Since I first took my shahada and beyond I have always had a good grasp on understanding religion and the word of God.  Even before.  Well, for the past 7-8 years I have wanted to be a type of leader mainly because I feel I am a good communicator, I have understanding, I am willing to work hard and I get along with people beautifully!  I want to know how can I or where can I go to be trained as an Imam.  Here in America I mean.  I'm very aware of Al-Azhar and other Universities Abroad, but here (especially in Minnesota) this information or the places for training are unknown to me.  I believe that right now with this so called war on "terrorism", and with the unjustices Muslims are going through and will be going through, we need leadership that not only appeals to people, but leadership that is just and that truly represents Islam.  I believe I can be that person (insha allah).  Forgive me if this sounds like an ad for campaigning, but I do mean this and I mean it as humbly as I can say it.  Can someone help a brotha'?

Jazakullah Khair

Welcome to the board. :)

As far as education within the United States, how about the American Open University?

As for your other problem, why don't you volunteer at your local masjid and maybe offer to teach some classes there to the youth.  Try to be as involved in community events.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

First of all, welcome to the board :) I hope your time here is beneficial for you, inshaAllah.
My problem is, even though financially I know I'm not really ready, but mentally and spiritually I know I am ready to get married.
I think being 'financially ready' means different things to different people.  One sister might be looking for someone who can buy her a lot of things, pay for an extravagant wedding, etc.. another sister might just want a brother with a steady job, who can take care of the needs of their family.  So a lot of it is really relative to the sister in question.

To be really frank though, if you do not have a source of income, and have no way of providing for a family whatsoever.. then I think you should have patience and wait until a time when you are able to care for the needs of your family properly.

Of course you know your situation better than I do bro.. I just mean to say that marriage comes with certain responsibilities, and I don't think anyone should approach it until they are capable of fulfilling them.
My question is how do I go about meeting or even approaching a sister with the intent of proposal.
that's a tough one :)
I want to know how can I or where can I go to be trained as an Imam.
As far as I know there really isn't any special training for the title of "imam".. but an imam usually is a hafiz of Qur'an, and is well versed in one or more of the Islamic sciences.  One university in the US that caters to this (that's actually a long distance learning program) is : American Open University.

I hope I was of some help to you inshaAllah :)

You could also try http://www.islamicau.org/.  It is Islamic American University, in Chicago.  You can also do it through distance learning.  My sister is a student, but I am a student at AOU, previous posts mentioned it.
They are both very good.
