Have you studied Arabic? If so, how?

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah-

I have a sincere question for you all.  I'm a Muslimah who really wants to learn Arabic,
insha'Allah.  Although I live in the states, my gut feeling is that I could never really
pick up Arabic fluently unless I go overseas to an that is predominantly Arabic-speaking.
But there are so many options for us in the west (and I don't currently have a mahrem
right), that it's made it hard for me to figure out my best options.

Have any of you learned Arabic?  How, exactly?  What program/country did you study in?
How long did it take?  What form of Arabic did you learn?  How did it benefit you? (ok,
that last one is just meant to encourage all of us, not that I doubt its benefit).

Some naseehah would be wonderful, may Allah reward you all.
salaam

sis anonymous,

i have so far failed to learn arabic  :( but it's because of not enough time and effort spent, i know.  i found that at rosetta stone you can do 45 minute practice vocabulary lessons for free - the benefit being work on pronunciation.

(i have a tape and books i've used, too, but i think you need a teacher to really learn any language well.)

Asalamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi,

I'm still learning arabic, Alhamdulillah. I started at home [UK] with an egyptian sister, an excellent teacher Masha Allah, but only a 1 hour lesson a week...it was very slow!
Last summer I went to egypt for an intensive course over 5 weeks, and I learnt so much! It helped alot, it was a good kickstart, I managed to complete 3 levels [kitaab al asaasi]. The teachers were excellent [and strict] no english in the classroom, so your pushed to speak....and you do....eventually.  I would reccommed it to everyone, if you can go, then go. Once your out of your routine and day to day chores, you'll be able to focus and Insha Allah you won't have many other distractions.

assalamualaikum  :),
i havent had the opp to check out this program yet, but have heard only great things about it so far. middlebury college in vt has a language institute every summer. you're immersed in the languaged you sign up for, and from what ive heard, you come out knowing a lot of the language in just 8 (or is it 10?) weeks. check middlebury's website for more info I suppose.
take care,

Arabic is indeed a difficult language to learn...needs lots of time and dedication.
I've heard about several programs that teach Arabic and, being a teacher myself, I would recommend the immersion type (this is the kind of program where everyone in class speaks only the language u're studying, no other languages allowed).
Two types of immersion programmes: 1. inside the Arab speaking world (I think Egypt has by far the largest number of such programs but check also Syria and Jordan); 2. in the USA: the only effective one that I know of is the Middlebury Arabic School (the one mentioned in the previous post). This is a 9-week-long summer intensive course (it's in fact a 24-hours a day course, because u arent allowed to speak English even outside the classroom). However, it's a bit expensive (~$6000)...
Here's the link if you're interested:

http://www.middlebury.edu/~ls/Arabic/index.html

There's also an American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA). It recently published a list of all academic institutions which offer courses on Arabic, Mideast or Islam plus a coursefinder that covers several Arabic countries as well. Check it all out at:

Good luck!

Are you an Arab sis? (If you don't mind me asking) The reason I ask is because I know alot of young people of Arab origin who lose the language when their family come to the States.  If you speak Arabic it can be very easy to start reading and writing it, if you don't already know how.  That was the case for me and I began with the pronounciation of the alphabet and learning what 'fatha' and 'dumay' were. After that you take baby steps in reading. And read alot! Even if you makes mistakes pretty soon you'll find yourself whizzing through it and then being able to understand it. It takes awhile but it's worth it. Alot of people are surprised that I learned Arabic that way! :)
If you don't know the language at all, I suppose you could have friends teach you words and/ phrases. Making a good collection in your memory could help in making sentences. Although I doubt that anyone will talk to you in formal Arabic. That's so hard to find!
Hope I was of some help!

I started with a du'a - Allah please make the lessons easy on my tongue, and seal them in my heart! I started with lessons at one of the local Masajid (they developed their own course including Tajwyd for sisters.) I take formal lessons at least 6 weeks out of each year either there or at the University where I work, which has an excellent course (but is very expensive.)

I was able to handle myself fairly well at Hajj alhamdullilah, and have found it gets easier each time I go into it. It helped me to have a actual teacher. Pronunciation, where my facial structures should be, etc. was easier when I had a person in front of me. I also take every opportunity to increase my sight vocabulary. I try to learn a new word by sight each week. One of our teachers encouraged us to keep trying. He said inshaAllah we would be rewarded doubly for the struggle to learn! I have found that to be so. The thing is, keep trying. Drills have helped immensely. If you can get one of the books recommended in the other posts (tapes along with the books are useful too) you can do a little each day. InshaAllah you will be rewarded for your efforts.
Keep studying!
Muneerah :-)

Alhamdulillah!

I have also been looking to learn arabic. It is a duty for us anyway! So I was looking at some of the posts recommended by the others and bumped into this one. I started looking around the site slowly and got totally hooked! (in the positive sense).

It must be the GREATEST arabic learning site for beginners ever!
At least after studying it for 30mins ;)

It is free and interactive online. :-[

May Allah give us taufiqh inshallah!
