Gm Foods

[slm],

A general question to everyone.. what do you think of Gentically Modified  Food ????
Do you tihnk as our population gorws ever more, we need more ways to encourage growth for food or make it last more ???

Or in the case of some countries do you think its quite right that we give them GM crops so that they produce better produce and better profits for those who have invested masses in the techonology ??

Or do you think GM food has more sinister qualities where a certain product or value can cause damage to the whole ecosystem ???

Do you also think that there is a danger of us disrupting nature and perhaps going against the blessings of Allah by supposedly enriching the food ???

Just wondering while I have my modified fish and chips....

I'm unsure about the effect on the ecosystem, but if a GM food can be made so crops can grow in harsh areas like Ethopia- then I feel it would be a benefit.  But definitely not to enhance the profits of the greedy who already line their pockets with money of the poor masses around the world.

GM foods give me the creeps, the whole idea of it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable about its ture agenda.

Theirs more famine now then their was in the past, yet we have these vast supplies of overproduced wheat and grains.

The GM produce seems to have made things worse. I dont really know much about it, but from what i've read, a lot of different food chains have been affected, especiaslly those which support small animal life and birds.

I dont trust GM foods, and would prefer not to eat it, although i aint paranoid about it, i dont really give it much thought when buying food, but some of the research done on animals  seems to be a bit worrying.

most food has been genetically altered, just at a very slow place, specialized breeding of cattle has changed the genetics over a long period of time,  cross polinization and the such, while it will take several growing seasons, has been done on crops for centuries.

this might be only part one (am very tired, but couldn't resist...)

the genetic altering of cattle (mostly to improve breed "characteristics") and cross-pollination to produce hybrid plants is completely unlike what's being done now to foods.  these new strategies are to insert coding sequences (DNA sequence which codes for RNA which codes for amino acids which code for proteins) across species.  example, the peanut sequence inserts being used in corn, and, um, maybe even other things.  nature doesn't do such things.  perhaps radiation accidents could accomplish something similar, but not even the slow course of natural change and adaptation can do these kinds of things.

but, that's not where i'd like to focus my thoughts on this.  unfortunately, nearly all of this kind of stuff is unnecessary, if we fix the problems that are making it seem like we need to change our food to better meet our needs.  in my opinion, nope, we don't.  this is all backwards!  we overfertilized and synthetically fertilized until our soil was dead.  have we fixed that yet?  we've narrowed the range of varieties of food grown to try to grow the same foods and in the same varieties everywhere.  have we fixed that yet?  we've over herbicided most of the planet.  have we fixed that yet?  we've over pesticided most of the planet.  have we fixed that yet?  we've destroyed local economies, driving local growers out of production, the people who know and care for the soil, and the ones who KNOW how to fix it when it's sick.  have we fixed that yet?  we've polluted most of the water supply on the planet.  have we fixed that yet?  we've fostered economic systems where some people have way too much money, and therefore a constant need to have new things to buy and a short-attention span in this greed for novelty right down to the foods they eat, especially in closed down cities that are removed from real food sources and people have never even seen soil or growing plants, and when they do they think they're "dirty".  have we fixed that yet?  we've allowed the greed for profit provide us only with inedible food, even overtaking our own aesthetic sensibilities right down to our intuitive ability to look at a foodstuff and evaluate whether it's healthy or not, nutritious or not.  have we fixed that yet?

ok ok ok.....maybe i just better go to sleep.  um, tomorrow i'll continue in a fresh state of mind......:)

and...hmmmm...i think this is more of a round-the-water-cooler subject than a personal problem.....hmmmmmm

1)  I believe in GM foods so long as the seeds are not controlled by one country

2) I believe in Gene therapy and modification so long as the person will gain an advantage ... eg stronger bones are an advantage, blue eyes are not (the number of asian girls with dark features and blue eyes is incredible..i suppose it says something about them )

so, um, muqaddar, are you one of those "quick fix, forget the past, what's done is done, can't worry about that now" kind of guys??    ;)

hey chris, don't mind muqaddar - he's just being silly.... :D

(is he smart?.......or does he have a good sense of humor??  hmmmm...can't tell......)

he has a self-imposed limit to how many words he can use, so he can't go into detail, like........how dark eyes are advantages in some climates and light levels, but not others.  and he doesn't have time to explain that in some climates it's an advantage to have very light but very strong bones, while in other climates shorter, thicker strong bones are an advantage.  and he can't get into clarifying that bone density and not bone thickness determines bone strength.

lots and lots of asian girls with blue eyes?  he's daydreaming, i think.....   ;)
