brother abdul jalil, thanks, this was very informative about witr. but i wonder if you could answer some other questions it raised.....? (so that's why odd numbers are so obviously preferable to even ones, instinctually..... ;) even numbers feel all closed in and tight, no openness to them. now i understand why odd numbers have more life, substance to them - that it's not just the final lack of pairing, it's what exists beyond the pairing.) um...sorry... the questions: my dictionary says that "one" is not witr in either formal egyptian or syrian - so in what kind of arabic does witr mean one? is it a bedouin dialect or something like that? i have been unable to find definitions for the "names" of the rest of the prayers, either. glossaries seem to be satisfied with giving applications of words, rather than true definitions. (the prayers aren't listed here in help, either. maybe someone could add them, with their names defined?) is yellow or small bird the correct root for asfr? does it have to do with associations with dawn? am i looking in all the wrong places for my information?? :D is there somewhere i can find these things easily? i must have 40 bookmarks for basic information, and none of them are comprehensive..... and, a question i've asked everyone i know and also asked here, but with no luck: does anyone know a good transliterated dictionary that includes islamic terms, rather than just common vocabulary and phrases for travellers? (so someday i'll be able to read a regular dictionary, but i can't now, so i can't find anything.....) mwishka |
does anyone know a good transliterated dictionary that includes islamic terms, rather than just common vocabulary and phrases for travellers?
A Learner's Arabic English Dictionary by F. Steingass. I have been using this for a while and I like it. It lists words alphabetically in both Arabic and it transliteration. I believe you can find most Islamic words in this dictionary with a little effort. The alphabetical listing makes it easier to find words for those who don't understand Arabic grammar. Also, it has decent cross-references. |

thanks for the dictionary suggestion br asim. i should be able to find it, though i don't recall ever seeing it in a store in the ditionary section... any answers for my many other questions here? (which don't belong in here, anyway, but i don't want to start a new topic for every single question i have...) mwishka |

'witr' can mean any odd number: 1, 3, 5, etc Allah is witr and loves witr. this is a hadeeth i think, but i don't have a ref for it. the word might not be used in egyptian or syrian vocabulary, but it is a bonne fide Fus-haa word (Fus-haa means formal Arabic) take care ps. asfar = yallow, starts with a 'hamza alef' asfoor= bird, starts with 'ain' , a different letter than 'hamza alef' i'm not a linguist, but i think the 2 words are from different roots. the first root would likely be 'safar', second root would be 'asaf' -- MAYBE ??? |

mwishka witr literally means odd numbers(classical arabic) i do not know about a transliterated dictionnary. there are some islamic glossary, but i think you already have one http://www.alharamain.org/english/articles/islamic-glossary.htm |
