RAMALLAH (R) — Israeli occupation forces took over the Reuters office in Ramallah on Monday during a raid in the West Bank city.
Witnesses said soldiers and an armoured personnel carrier were guarding the entrance of the six-storey building and soldiers had set up a base in the Reuters office on the fourth floor. Army snipers were posted around the building, they said.

A Reuters cameraman was allowed to remove equipment from the office but soldiers barred entry to other journalists. He said the soldiers were sleeping in the Reuters office and had set up their own laptop computers and maps.

Reuters immediately lodged a protest with the Israeli army.

“Reuters protests strongly that the building housing our office in Ramallah has been taken over by the army today for the second time in recent months and our journalists barred from entering,” it said in a letter. “We consider this a violation of press freedoms.”

Asked for comment, an army spokesman said: “We have taken the building over because it is in a strategic location.”

He said the soldiers would stay for a “limited” time in the office, which is on high ground in a central part of the city not far from Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's headquarters.

The occupatioon army sent troops and tanks into Ramallah before dawn and surrounded Arafat's presidential compound in a raid which it said was intended to arrest resistance activists suspected of taking part in suicide attacks against Israelis.

It was the second time the army had occupied the Reuters office since the start of the 20-month-old Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in September 2000.
