1001 ways to worship God (to be righteous)

[slm] I would like to come up with a list of ways to worship God and be righteous individuals.  It may consist of small and easy deeds to more difficult ones.  I would very much be interested in what you all have to say, so all your input would be helpful.  You may be as detailish and as specific as you like.  Okay, I will start.

1--Greet all Muslims with "alsalam alaikum."  This includes individuals we meet in person and even e-mails we send to each other.

2--Instead of saying thank you to each other, maybe we could say, "Jazaka Allahu khayran."  This way we are praying for each other and not merely being polite.  The response would be "wa ayakum."

3--Refraining from all negative comments about others.   I know this one is a hard one but it can be done and it is quite rewarding, actually.  So, none of that, "Why does she act like that?  Why does he dress like that?  Why does he always mumble?  Did you see how they always stare at everyone?...........and so on.

    Okay, brothers and sisters.  Let's see how many we can list and how many we can actually put into practice.

Salam

5. Preserving ties of kinship: " Whoever wishes that his provision be increased and his age lengthened, let him maintain the ties of kinship." [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

6. Al-Istighfaar: "Whoever seeks forgiveness for believing men and believing women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man ad believing woman." [at-Tabarani, classed as Hasan by Al-Albani]

7. "Whoever enters a market and says: 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah waHdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul Hamdu yuHyi wa yumeetu wa huwa Hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khayr, wahuwa `alaa kulli shay'in qadeer' [there is nothing worthy of worship but Allah, He is alone without partner, to Him belongs dominion and praise, he causes life and death and He is the Living and does not die. In His Hand is all the good, and He is over all things competent.] Allah will write for him a million good deeds, erase a million of his bad deeds and raise him a million levels."[at-Tirmidhi, classed as Hasan by al-Albani]

8. Performing prayers in congregation: "Prayer in congregation is superior to praying individually twenty-seven times." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

9. Jihad: "Standing of a man in a row (saff) in the way of Allah is superior to 60 years of worship." [al-Hakim, classed as Saheeh by al-Albani] This is the superiority of standing in a row, so what about one who fights in the way of Allah for days, or months, or years?

Assalamu Alaikum,

11)  Having complete reliance on Allahu SubhanaHu Wata'ala, that no matter what happens, good or bad, we will take it.

12)  Praying salah on time, no matter what we're doing, we make the intention of performing salah and stand before our Creator, SubhanAllah.

13)  Trying to keep our intentions pure and by doing that, inshaAllah we will have a more purified heart.

Wassalamu Alaikum,
Betul

Excellent idea.
(don't mean to "shoot" ahadith left and right, but figured it would be useful to see some sort of source. Please see your local mufti/imam/scholar for more detailed information)  :)

[glow=red,2,300]10b)[/glow]  Be patient in a time of calamity, like when a loved one passes from this world. Know that the Prophet (may peace be upon him) responded to the mourning woman with a quick tongue with: 'No doubt, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity." (B)

And: "Allah says, 'I have nothing to give but Paradise as a reward to my believer slave, who, if I cause his dear friend (or relative) to die, remains patient (and hopes for Allah's Reward)." (M)

[glow=red,2,300]14)[/glow]  Making wudu’ and nafl prayers.

The Prophet once said he heard Bilal’s (rA) footsteps in Paradise. When asked what was it that he had done to deserve it, Bilal humbly replied: "I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written for me." (B)

The Prophet said: "When a believer washes his face [with the intention of making ablution], every sin he contemplated with his eyes, will be washed away from his face along with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away with the water or with the last drop of water with the result that he comes out pure from all sins." (M)

And: "Whoever performs the ablution as I have done this time and then proceeds to the mosque and offers a two-Rak'at prayer and then sits there (waiting for the compulsory congregational prayers), then all his past sins will be forgiven." The Prophet further added, "Do not be conceited (thinking that your sins will be forgiven because of your prayer)." (B)

[glow=red,2,300]15)[/glow]  Do easy, good deeds REGULARLY.

The Prophet was asked, "What deeds are loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He added, 'Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability."  (B)

[glow=red,2,300]16)[/glow] Keep your mouth shut and preserve your chastity.

The Prophet said, "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him” and, "A slave of Allah may utter a word without thinking whether it is right or wrong, he may slip down in the Fire as far away a distance equal to that between the east." (B)

[glow=red,2,300]17)[/glow]  In addition to keeping your mouth shut, entertain guests “generously”.

The Prophet said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt (or insult) his neighbor; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should entertain his guest generously." (B)

And, "The period for keeping one's guest is three days (and don't forget) his reward." It was asked, "What is his reward?" He said, "In the first night and the day he should be given a high class quality of meals; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should entertain his guest generously; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good (sense) or keep quiet." (B)

[glow=red,2,300]18a)[/glow] Give charity, and if you can’t, a good word is like charity.

The Prophet said, "Protect yourself from the Fire." He then turned his face aside (as if he were looking at it) and said again, "Protect yourself from the Fire," and then turned his face aside (as if he were looking at it), and he said so for the third time till we thought he was looking at it. He then said, "Protect yourselves from the Fire, even if with one half of a date and he who hasn't got even this, (should do so) by (saying) a good, pleasant word.' (B)

[glow=red,2,300]18b)[/glow] Help build a masjid.
“He who builds a mosque for Allah, Allah would build for him (a house) in Paradise like it.” (M)

[glow=red,2,300]19)[/glow] Make dhikr. Some examples:

The Prophet said," Whoever says: "La ilaha illal-lah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shai'in qadir," one hundred times will get the same reward as given for manumitting ten slaves; and one hundred good deeds will be written in his accounts, and one hundred sins will be deducted from his accounts, and it (his saying) will be a shield for him from Satan on that day till night, and nobody will be able to do a better deed except the one who does more than he." (B)

And, "Whoever says, 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi (Glory be to God and I praise Him),' one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. (B)

And, "The example of the one who celebrates the Praises of his Lord (Allah) in comparison to the one who does not celebrate the Praises of his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one." (B)

And, "Shall I tell you a word which is one of the treasures of Paradise? It is: La hawla wala quwwata illa billah (There is no power or might save with Allah)." (B)

And: “If anyone extols Allah after every prayer thirty-three times (Subhan’Allah), and praises Allah thirty-three times (Alhamdulillah), and declares His Greatness thirty-three times (Allahu Akbar), ninety-nine times in all, and says to complete a hundred:"There is no god but Allah, having no partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him is praise due, and He is Potent over everything (La ilaha illal-lah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shai'in qadir)," his sins will be forgiven even If these are as abundant as the foam of the sea.” (M)

[glow=red,2,300]20)[/glow] Attend the funeral procession

The Prophet said: He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats. It was said: What are the qirats? He said: They are equivalent to two huge mountains. Two other narrators added: Ibn 'Umar used to pray and then depart (without waiting for the burial of the dead). When the tradition of Abu Huraira reached him, he said:" We have lost many qirats." (B)

20--Listen to Quran before we go to bed and try to actually listen and concentrate on the words.

21--When someone says something mean to us, instead of saying something mean back, say, "May God forgive you." (Allah yisamhik/ Allah yisamhak)
