| Salaam There is a new chapter of the national orginizaton Sustain (stop US tax aid to Israel Now) here in Albany. This is an activist group for people who are interested in helping to bring a just solution to the crisis in the middle east. With a focus on the United States role in this occupation. Over 5 billion dollars in direct and indirect aid was sent to Israel this year. The situation in Palestine is like that in apartheid in South Africa when coporations were pressured to divest a resoltution was able to be crystalize. Under the US foreign assitance act aid to Israel is illegal. The life blood of the occupation is US money and support. If we as americans can pressure our government to end support to Israel we can in effect turn the tides of the carnage which is occuring there. This is SUSTAIN's goal. SUSTAIN is: Stop US Tax-funded Aid to Israel Now! SUSTAIN is a non-hierarchical, grassroots organization committed to supporting and sustaining the Palestinian movement for justice, human rights and self-determination. The United States government supports Israeli violations of Palestinian national and human rights militarily, economically, and ideologically. The most tangible form of this support is the massive tax-funded aid that goes to Israel. We are committed to building a campaign against US military and economic aid to Israel so that US tax-dollars do not support the abuse of human rights. We support the following principles: -END TO OCCUPATION: We call for an immediate end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. -EQUALITY UNDER LAW: We oppose the denial of political, social, and economic rights in law and practice to the Palestinian citizens of Israel. -RIGHT OF RETURN: We support the right of return of Palestinian refugees. BUILDING THE SUSTAIN CAMPAIGN COALITION POLITICS: We strive to work in solidarity with liberation struggles throughout the world, including those on behalf of other colonized peoples, for human rights and economic justice, and against militarism and all forms of oppression-national, environmental, racist, and sexiest. | Update on what SUSTAIN is planning here in Albany inshaAllah Albany branch of SUSTAIN is orginizing right now for several things. Starting on July 4th we will be down at the plaza distributing information about the situation in Palestine talking to people and collecting signatures for a petition to end the injustice there which we will send to Mr Mcnulty. We are also working on a draft of a sample letter that people can use to write to Mr. Mcnulty about his unilaterial support for Palestine and finally putting an end to the occupation. A petition is also be circulated here in the community through various churches and other orginizations. Also starting in roughly 2 weeks we will begin weekly demonstrations in front of the Federal Building here in Albany exact time and place has not been set yet. Plans are being made for a fund raiser to help rebuild Palestine. On August 4th (the anniversary of the bombing of hiroshima) there will be peace march to end the use of nuclear weapons this is extremly pertainent since Bush has stated that there is situations in this war on terror in which he is willing to use nuclear weapons one of which is if the new war in iraq advances to slowly. Also an an educational session about Palestine (teach in) is being planned for september which will follow up on various war on terrorism educational activities including on the 11th a "memorial service" not only for the civilians killed here but the civilians whose lives have been claimed by Bushs unjust war. On Septermber 16 a big rally is being planned in memory of the 20th anniversary of Sabra and Shatilia. On a national level SUSTAIN is working to lobby Catepilliar to stop selling their bulldoozers to the Israeli government which they use for house destruction. Also SUSTAIN is working to lobby congressmen to finally put an end to the illegal flow of military aid to Israel. Also SUSTAIN is working to put together a 2 day music fesitivel called Free Palestine which will raise money and awarness for the palestinian right of self determination.
