[u]I was wondering whether anyone else would be interested in sending similar letters to the Indian Consulates in their localities?[/u][/i][/center] 14 Rabi-ul-Awwal 1423 May 27,2002 The High Commissioner 852 Schoeman Street Arcadia 0083 By fax: (012) 342 5310 H E Mr. S S Mukherjee The ghastly events, which have transpired in Gujarat and other places in India, are sufficient to haunt the soul of any human being. The callous barbaric behaviour of perpetrators has transgressed all boundaries of sanity. The carnage this time has surpassed all previous instances of communal riots in Gujarat (1969, 1985, 1989 or 1992), both in terms of lives lost as well as brutality and ruthlessness. Amidst all the mayhem the Indian Government has agonizingly or rather ecstatically played the role of a silent observer as though some good fairy will manifest herself to end the pillage. The approach of the Indian Government has been utterly disgraceful and appalling to say the least. It has displayed a cavalier and most obnoxious attitude to the loss of human life, property and sacred institutions. The attitude of the Indian Government in this matter has done the human race a great shame. We strongly demand an explanation for this inhumane behaviour. Thanking you Yours faithfully M.
