Forgive my intrusion.

I don't mean to make anyone feel weird or uncomfortable here.  I can't believe I'm posting on the women's board but I have a question just for women.

Um.....when you ladies want to work out and stay fit...how do you run and stuff with hijab on?  And....um....what about riding horses and stuff?

And...hmm.....basically, how does a woman stay active while still maintaining hijab?

Thank you for your time and sorry for the disturbance.

Elementary, my dear Watson  8)

We just DO IT!  :-*

I just can't explain any further, akhi :) Hope this helps, inshaAllah.
And...hmm.....basically, how does a woman stay active while still maintaining hijab?
If you refer the hijab to more than a piece of cloth on our heads and includes having the adab of a Muslim woman, then I don't think being active, like playing outdoor sports is a breach of such adab.

I think sports like jogging, archery, horseback riding, netball, cycling, bowling, badminton, snorkelling etc are decent sports when care is taken such that is not potrayed as a spectator sport for people to ogle (of which I don't think they are anyways). And if sisters are comfortable with the privacy or lack of it that they have, then, I think she can stay active doing all of that, and still maintain hijab and adab, inshaAllah.

Hijab does not restrict our freedom to do things. We can still be fit, confident and comfortable with ourselves with the hijab on... and loving it :)

Just my opinion. Others may differ. :-)

Well dear watson have you ever heard of an indoor bike or trampoline?  ???

I think that it does depend on the person's comfort zone.  Walking is a good sport. I still go biking.  Twice a week I bike 20 miles with my parents and in the winter we were up to 5 miles walking.   :-*

I had t-shirts sewn for me that reach my knees.

Like what Sis Barr said, if hijab here refers to our scarves then it shouldn't impede us from keeping fit and exercising at all.

I play tennis with jogging pants, long sleeves dark coloured t-shirts and a cotton scarf. Mind u, even then I can still serve an ace  :-*

Anyhoo...in short we try not to sweat this kinda stuff cos ultimately we decide what best we can do in a given situation.  Ain't this true of everyone..hijab or not ?

Wassalam.

Walikum Asalam,

The sisters said it all but 2 piece hijab is the best for playing sports :)  By wearing a hijab you feel soo empowered i think it opens more doors for you.. :)

emm in many muslim countries they have separate girls clubs ..which provide jogging area .,swimming etc..and other facilities indoors and so we dont really have to wear hijab while takin part in sports as table tennis and so forth ...as far as horse riding is concerned .....emm havent done it for so long ..

See, I can understand how things are possible in a predominantly muslim nation.  But here in the states everything is so unisex I don't see how women do it.  And what about running outdoors?  And what about wearing baggy pants, is that okay?  And why am I being called watson?   :-/ And why am I starting every question with and?  I'll stop now.

Indoor bikes, trampolines, and running machines you say......

Salam alaikum wrwb,
I dont know if this is the same as riding a horse..but when I first came here to Egypt, I rode a camel by the pyramids and I was fully covered. They covered my legs with a big blanket that fit around my waist. It was acually pretty fun!

Akhi, it really depends on the sisters' comfort level. Just don't know how else to explain it. As long as she is properly attired, feels she is safe from fitnah, then... I can't see why she can't participate in outdoor activities.

Have a look at this old thread :)  Muslim Women's Games

Allahua'lam :-)

P.S. As for the horse thing.. isn't it the same like riding a bike, driving a car? So Y not? :)

Don't get me wrong here.  I'm not saying women shouldn't do these things.  Quite the contrary.  When I get married.....IF I get married, I would like my wife to be able to be active like myself and I was just wondering how this could be done.  So my question is not to be taken as a question in why but merely as a question in how.

[slm] Brother

depends on what you are refrring to when you speak about Hijab.

If you are referring to a haed covering then i have to say that scarves, burkhas etc are so comfortable and practical these days that sometimes you don't actually realise you wearing one.  It does not get in the way of an active lifestyle either.

If you are referring to the niqaabs / veil, cloaks, abayas etc...outer covering...loose garmets used over clothes...etc.....then it's a matter of practicality.  People opt to use baggy track pants and long t-shirts (with long sleeves of course) to accommodate the more physical sports and some sister (my own included) use the baggies underneath and still cover up with an abaya.  She manages quiet well actually and is more active than the rest of us!

I think we have been conditioned to think that in order to participate in sport, one has to be scantily dressed or wear clothes that fit like a glove.  This is not entirley true i would think :-)

Sister around the globe do it with modesty  :D

I don't know if this answers your question?

Assalamu'alaikum,

Akhi, I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your question... I hope the answer given by bismilla is wot you're looking for.

Basically, that's wot we wear... something baggy, like pants and T-shirts with hijab for practicability. and where you want to do your stuff is up to you. Some sisters don't mind jogging on the track in a stadium with men playing football at the field.. some prefer the quiet parks and some would only jog in the privacy of a female only gym. Some sisters go rock climbing, bungee jumping, hiking and do not mind the presence of other men around.. while some do mind.

Some feels comfortable only with a long sleeved T-shirt that reaches the knee, while some just feels comfortable with a long-sleeved T-shirt that reaches the thighs. Some prefers to wear a larger hijab while some prefer a smaller one....

So, it's really up to her. And she does it in accordance to her comfort level, and how strict she is about things.

Like I said before, if she feels that she is safe from fitnah, and her actions are still within the shariah,  then, she can do outdoors stuff, wherever she wants.

Hope this helps, inshaAllah.
