A forum for encouraging intellectual dialogs and for exploing divergent opinions about issues facing contemporary Muslims today. 2. A safe place to practice the Islamic methodology of critical thinking and the etiquette of polite discourse and disagreement. 3. Understanding the rich tapestry of Islam as a blueprint for achieving humanity's goals (spiritual, moral, social, economic, etc.) Topics in this sequence: 1. Contemporary socio-political interpretations of "La Ilaha Illa Allah" (No deity or divinity beside God) 2. The Qur'an and the purpose of life (Based on lecture by Dr. Jeffrey Lang) 3. Critical thinking skills and the role of intellectual curiosity and doubt in the pursuit of knowledge. 4. The bases of authority in religious fatwah (religious decrees)-Part 1 5. The bases of authority in religious fatwah-Part 2 6. Responsibilities of the scholars and the followers. 7. The difference between Islam as an identity and Islam as the Truth. 8. Prophetic method of social change. 9. Taxonomy of contemporary Islamic Thought. 10.Does the political system in Islam have to be a theocracy? 11.Islamic protections for freedom of thought and freedom of speech. 12.Islamic guarantees of women's rights. 13.Islamic safeguards against mistreatment of non-Muslims. 14.Islamic foundations of human rights. 15.Islam and the challenge of adapting to modernity, and continued progress. 16.Shari'ah under any other name (the broad objectives, maquassid, of Shari'ah) A collaborative effort by: CAIR-Minnesota, The Muslim American Society (MAS) and the Masjid Al-Rahman [slm] ;-) |
