Mission #2: Truth

Asalaamu Alaikum Madina Citizen

Your mission this week, should you choose to accept it, is the following:

If you could give one piece of advice to the next generation of Muslims, like all the kids going to Islamic weekend schools, what would it be?

For extra credit relate what you come up with to someone in real life.

As always, should you, or any member of the Madina fail in your mission, the Madina will disavow all knowledge of your actions.

This post will self-destruct in five seconds. (or be moved to the ARK soon)

um, brother khalid,

can i get a different opportunity for "extra credit" since i don't even know anybody who goes to an islamic school on the weekend or otherwise??  :(

i know, i know, i'm just getting to participate at all out of kindness and generosity.....

but i give advice here all the time -- do any of my replies to articles or posts here count, which would include advice to muslims for their own futures and that of their children?   those are sort of my few opportunities to advise people personally......

Its no biggie mwishka since this a Truth week and not a Dare week. The first part of the Mission is the more important. We want to hear what *one* piece of advice you would give.

So what's it to be then? ;-)

[slm]  ;D ,

Every Monday - Friday, I have to teach about 8 kids the recitation of the Qur'an and Islamic studies. I once gave the kids a piece of advice -
always say "Bismillah..." before doing *anything*..."bismillahi Rahmaan ar-Raheem" means "In the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Merciful". When you say "Bismillah..", you're saying that you're doing this for the sake of Allah..you're doing whatever you're doing for Allah and Allah only (swt). Once you get used to saying  this all the time, you won't do anything that will displease Allah (swt). Ya see, no one would say "bismillah.." before stealing because they know that what they're about to do is wrong..so they can't steal in the name of Allah.

In short, I gave lil kids some advice about doing everything in the name of Allah and remembering Him - it will help you to stay away from sins.

Hope that counts inshaAllah  ;D

With Peace
A Stranger

"Learn the Real Islam.- Not the cultural or 'hislam'. The knowledge will protect you forever."

The one thing I say to my son everyday as I kiss him off to school is:
"Remember Who You Are." ;-)

The piece of advice i gave to my teaching group was, repect your parents, and keep them happy, cause nowadays the kids are loosing respect for parents.
I was explaining to them that paradise is under the feet of your mother and it made them laugh actually, and so i explained the meaning of helping your mum, dad, keeping them happy and respecting them and Inshallah you'll all go jannah.

ok, my single piece of advice would be this:

recognize, accept, and embrace the idea that humans are limitlessly educable.  try to remember never to assume that you know something so well that you have no more to learn about it from even the most unexpected sources, remember to always maintain a constant awareness of your own assumptions and preconceived notions, and, most importantly, offer every person you encounter, drawn from your heart and expressed in your words and actions, the grace and dignity that person would have had in the eyes of the prophet himself.

As-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah

I'd remind the youth to keep good company. Not for cheesy reasons like: 'a good friend is someone who will be there for you during rough times', but because a friend is someone who reminds you of doing good and who will steer you away from harmful actions, like steering you away from walking into a thorny branch.

As for a real-life example, I won't give names, but I'm sure we all know someone/heard of someone who changed their life for the better, even by just changing who they hang out with. It's amazing how many Muslims leave the life of this world *just* as they're doing this/making this transition with sincere intentions, like Allah's way of taking them when their slate is clean/erased, subhan'Allah.  Allahu'alim.

"The day will come when the transgressor will bite his hands (in anguish) and say, "Oh! Would that I had followed the path with the messenger. Ah! Woe to me! I wish I had never taken so-and-so for a khalil (intimate friend). He indeed led me away from the reminder after it came to me. Indeed, the devil is a traitor to man." [25:27-29]

And the Prophet (s) said: "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the seller of musk, and the one who blows the blacksmith's bellows. So as for the seller of musk then either he will grant you some, or you buy some from him, or at least you enjoy a pleasant smell from him. As for the one who blows the blacksmith's bellows then either he will burn your clothes or you will get an offensive smell from him." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Ibn Hazm said: Anyone who criticises you cares about your friendship. Anyone who makes light of your faults cares nothing about you.

Well, every wedneday i get together with 13/14 year old sisters and just talk about what role we as Muslims play in this game of Duniya. A piece of advice that I always start off with is:

"Allah has chosen you to be a Muslim, it's nothing that you've done for yourself. Every opportunity that you receive to please Allah should be followed up with a prayer of Thankfulness. The tree that bears the most fruit on it's branches causes the branch to bow down, this bowing is a show of thankfulness and humility. Therefore, every time we do anything of Allah and our deen we add a fruit to our branches and we should be thankful for that."

To my sunday schoolers I tell 'em this: "Never be afraid to be who you are, be proud and be strong as were the Prophets pbut and the Sahabaas raas. As much as you try to run away from being a Muslim you will always be one so therefore, know who you are and reflect the beauty of Islam in your actions,  talk, personality and thoughts."

Asalamu alykum wrb,

SubanaAllah some amazing advices.  :-X

Whenever we have YG meetings i tell my sistas about the importance of being Muslim first than anything else, we should forget our ethnic/national differences and work together as slaves of Allah(swt). Culture is a beautiful thing but never let it contradict w/ our deen. and Also, always represent Islam by good Adab. :)

Alhamdulillah good advice from all the bro's and sis'.  Jazakum Allahu Khayran.

Somthing I try to keep in mind and often remind my younger sister is to keep the concentration in salah.  I remind her often that salah is the most important thing is Islam, that it is the first thing that Muslims will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment, and we need to keep a lot of focus and concentration in salah to really feel it, InshaAllah.

This is not actually for me, or her but for every Muslim.  Salah being so important in our daily lives, praying 5 times a day, we need to focus and pray with more care and concentration, InshaAllah.

[slm],

Ok this kind of sound's like A_Strangers' advice but its kinda different? :), so i hope it still counts. The one piece advice I'd give was to never forget to pray to Allah, and basically to ALWAYS remember Allah because praying and thinking of the great things Allah subhantallah has given you, gives you a whole lot of patience. By the way you folks gave  some great advice :)

wasalam,

I tell my daughter and her friends to always remember they are Muslims; that they are special because they were chosen by The Most High to be Muslims, and they must always remember to observe proper adab. (Very well stated by Sister Nur ul Aain!)
I then add to:

Learn your deen! this is the best protection and has rewards too numerous to mention!
Make du'a - supplicate constantly
and always remember Allah SWT, this is the best thing to do in good times and bad.
:) Muneerah  :-)
