Dearest Brothers and Sisters,
I thought for some time about taking my children to this event and found myself wondering how in the world could I participate in a dunya-loving event  and spend so much money when there are too many muslims who would benefit from it.  I would just like to remind my brothers and sisters to not be so quick to indulge ourselves in fun, fun, and more fun, but instead save that money for an islamic study program or to help a fellow muslim.  Thank you for taking time to read my message.... :)

muminaa its true we should not waste our time, but islam isn't about punishment either. our kids need to have fun as well. and what better environment than with other muslim children in such a good wholesome atmosphere. islam isn't about extremes and we should always try to keep a balance. i don't think letting children enjoy themselves islamically is a 'dunya loving event'. in this case this can be something good for them and others.

Jannah,
Dear sister, please help me to understand what is islamic about six flags great adventure.  I beg your pardon because I never said that kids should not have fun and my intention was not to send that message.  However, I did say that for twenty dollars per person when there are muslims who need that money just to eat or pay rent is wasteful.  There are so many better ways to spend our time and money and at the same time let our children have fun.  And sister, if I felt Islam was a punishment, I probably wouldnt be Muslim ???
I do appreciate this dialogue and ultimately I know that everyone will do what they feel is acceptable, but I needed to offer my thoughts especially since our ummah needs strengthening and I doubt it can be strengthened by having fun at six flags :)

Sunday my family and others went to the local county park.

As I sat under the tree I watched our future ummah strengthen in many ways.

My son wasn't the only one in the group who had to stop playing- to pray. Today all the children stopped. This time he wasn't alone but of many.

At the table he wasn't the only one to stop and make a dua before eating. Today all the children stopped and said Bismillah.

When my son went swimming he went with many boys whos' bodies were covered from navel to knee. He wasn't the only one who couldn't wear tight bicycle type shorts.

When the moms needed to go to the restroom. the boys escorted us..  teaching them the first steps of "protecting" their moms' and women.

When it was time to roast marshmellows, my son did not get a sad face because he couldn't have any. This time there were halal marshmellows.

My son saw that a good time could be had with out boom box music, beer, free mixing and swimsuit nudity. Constantly through their daily lives they see and hear stuff from non-muslims and are challenged by it.

My son also had a good time with the other Muslim kids. They bonded and even tho they were all under the age of 9... you could see the future of thier ummah... our ummah ...strengthening....

Asalaamalaikum,

This is probably too late, but have they thought of using this event to collect the names of all the folks who are registered voters?  A database with a list of voters can be extremely valuable.  Just a thought!

Wasalaam.

[slm] you'd be surprised sister. many of the kids that came back said they loved it. everywhere they went there were muslims. muslim families picnic'ing, muslims praying, going on rides... many said they've never seen that many muslims. i think it's very beneficial for them. perhaps for your children you'd rather have something different, but i don't think we should discourage others from going. they should go and take their children. if i asked the children in my class 'have any of you been to a amusement park' they would all say yes... so what better alternative for the parents to take their kids on 'muslim day' where there is a good muslim environment. these are the kinds of things we need.. islamic alternatives otherwise our kids will be completely lost in this culture. to them islam is just sitting in a dark cold mosque learning things by rote. and then they go out to the public schools and real life and they just can't generalize these things to their life. if we have islam and teach islam in every environment they'll understand and actualize the practice, otherwise you have generations of muslims who have two lives, one in the mosque and one in the outside world and which one wins? or worse it becomes conceptual and cultural instead of real.
