Salaam aleikum.... I've been coming here for about a month now and I'm getting the feeling most of you guys are teenagers. Not that there's anything wrong with teens :-[ ... I'm just curious.... what's the age range of those who come in here? P.S. - I think these smileys are so cute!... ;-) , :-) |

sis, i believe that information is not known, though i have wondered myself (and suggested an anonymous survey once... hint hint). my guess is that you would be very near the mean age, perhaps one year above, and two or three years above the median. mwishka |

[slm] Kashif is referred to as "grandpa" here, so I think that destroys the median age being teenagers. ;) |

hmmm...i was reading the constitution and help section again - for about the 5th time recently - and it appears that the age distribution on this board should actually be readily available. i had forgotten this, but i think we were all forced to give our birthdates to register. most other websites that i've seen just make you verify that you're over a certain age, but i think --- and i could be wrong --- this board collects birthdates. so, um, bro bhaloo - do you have this information already? of course, i hope that you've structured it so that you don't actually have access to our birthdates, since you shouldn't, that it's just set up as a pass/fail date evaluation, but you must have the birth years accumulated somewhere, no? hee heeee looking forward to finding out (range, etc.)! put a simple little bar graph in help section maybe, automatically updated? (i kind of think there are a multitude of computer wizards here who could do all of this with the slightest bit of effort.....) mwishka |

so, this is the way it's going to go, eh?? :D we're going to have 587 (or whatever it is now) replies to this topic? when we have the data sitting in storage somewhere just waiting to be compiled?? hmmm...um, salik! weren't you the one who said you could maintain the smooth and wonderful function of the madina if needed? so, could you volunteer for data analysis as needed? (oops ---- what am i doing? akkk...overstepping my bounds again! eek! typical behavior for me, unfortunately. got a problem? ok, here are 20 possible ways to solve it - take your pick....::) ) um, mods/admins, perhaps you might ask for a data processing person to volunteer for this task? well by bro hanif's shoe size method, i'd be, um 39 i think it is. (right, people-of-the-continent ?) but by mujaahid's method, i'm either 91 or 21, and we haven't been able to figure out which it is...... mwishka :P |

sis barr, nah...i don't really care about anyone's specific age enough to do that - that doesn't mean i don't ask people sometimes, though! i am mighty curious, after all......... but i tend to be of the school of thought that, in cyberspace as in the rest of the world, you take people as they present their minds to you, and anything else is just ornamentation, including age. (akkk...and no, i'm not contradicting my akhwat discussion perspective - some of that ornamentation can definitely have an effect on the nature of the REST of your relationship with individuals.....no doubt!) it's just that somewhere you said your age was "7", so, since there was one possible explanation that would make that make a lot of sense, i figured i'd ask... why? should i be TRYING to figure out your age?? you're not putting me in the situation of having to give in to my typical compulsion to find a solution to any problem that seems difficult or tricky, are you..........? :D mwishka |

I felt that way :'( after my last teenage year ;) But as the years come, and I feel older (though not necessarily wiser), I feel more appreciation and respect for older people.. even if they are just a year older than me (or 2 seasons older ;)). 'coz, I felt that the invaluable experience that Allah has given us as we grow, is only given when we pass through the passage of time. even though i had deleted my post mentioning that i had some "social comments" on "revealing-not revealing age" patterns here, sis barr had seen that post, and asked me to post the comments. so here they are: commentary on age disclosure: (with specific comments only on the ages revealed in this thread, and not on ages found in the profiles.) here as elsewhere in the world, some trends persist, but, in an islamic context, certain other trends are "exaggerated". the most obvious - and common - age related social trend evident here, is that it's ok for men to be "older" but it is not ok for women. (male ages given freely here: 40, 45, 46. oldest female age given here: 26.) you've all heard it said: men become "distinguished", women become "old". now, some of my other comments do apply generally, but i think they take on a special character here at this islamic message board, where a general belief is that one should marry early - and that the question of marriage is not really a question here, as it might be in the general (american) public. in that context, it is less likely for a brother here to reveal his age is if it much younger than the norm, but sisters have no disadvantage in that regard. (the majority of ages which are shown in the profiles are in the early 20s, coincidentally the ideal age for marriage, as discussed here in a number of places.) women, unlike men, seem to think that reaching the age of 25 is getting "old", and, based on some discussions i recall here, a lot of people participating here seem to agree. my feelings on all of this: it's unconscionable to hold these views, of either oneself or others, because they're irrelevant. and i'm not going to bring up any of the same information i so rudely brought up in that chocolate discussion (sorry! i was just trying to give helpful information...) pointing to why this trend should actually be reversed. i'll leave only this tidbit: one study has shown that men, on average, reach the height of their ability to enjoy sexual relations at....18. but for women, that age is 34. (as usual, i think you can't be so specific about numbers like these, that it's way too individual...) i know a lot more about these subjects in terms of research than i would EVER reveal here, because i think much of it would be just inappropriate, but i think it shoqld kind of strike people that maybe, just maybe, a lot of our thinking is backwards on issues such as these, and that we're afraid to shake up our thinking because of historical social customs and our own preconceived notions and fears. and for some other thoughts on this, hamza yusuf: (i'm sure lots of you have seen this article already.....) A sickness of some Muslims today is that they've gotten into the whole age issue. Much like racism and sexism, it's identifying people with quantitative measurements. you can read the whole interview here: http://jannah.org/articles/hamza.html i don't agree with everything he says in the article, but he makes some very good points about the way we've allowed ourselves to become socially age segregated, to our detriment. and i DON'T mean that just discussing age or telling each other what our ages are (or not) is a sickness in itself - it's what we do with that information when we get it that affects us negatively. so it's no wonder that some people (me included) would just rather have people make up their own idea of us, based on how they perceive what we put out of ourselves. and i, personally, don't care what that perception is - if people think i'm five, me and bro hanif, that is ;) , well, then, i'm happy to be five. if like mujaahid you think i might sound at times like i'm 91 and at other times like i'm 21 - well then i'm happy to be 91 or 21, as you like. and the very last comment i'll make is the obvious one, that the prophet's greatest love was older than him by a good bit, so i think you can say he didn't fall into this "image' trap himself, and gave an example to show a way to choose a spouse based on one's own person and sense of self. this, of course, definitely is not to mean that any one type of choice is right or wrong, but that it should be a choice not based on age or other social structures - instead it should be based on much more important things. mwishka |

Bismillahirrahmaanirraheem! Assalaamuaalaikum wa rahmathullahi wa barakaathuhu! We have a great concern about our age. The age of others aswell makes a great difference. We have a different attitude towards those who are very old and our behaviour is different towards those who are too young. You may not want to marry a person who is not young and age matters in every aspect of life but we can't help it and we grow everyday. We may just miss an admission into a university and fail to get a job just because of crossing the age range prescribed and the Time keeps moving and things change so fast that sometimes you dream about your past that you should have done such and such when you were young but its all over. Age makes a great difference but when the angel of death comes he does not care about your age and when he comes is not known!! For he could come today, tomorrow ....any day and suddenly one day but SURELY he's gonna come and take you back. "Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high". Surah Nisa Chapter 4 Verse 78. "Verily, the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to (Allah), the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you used to do." Surah Jumah Chapter 62 Verse 8. So I don't think I should worry about my age for its not in my hand but if I want to be young always enjoying in the midst of Jannah Al Firdaus then yeah I have zillions of things to worry about............. "Draws near for mankind their reckoning, while they turn away in heedlessness. " " Comes not unto them an admonition (a chapter of the Qur'ân) from their Lord as a recent revelation but they listen to it while they play" Surah Al-Ambiyaa Chapter 21 Verses 1,2. Wa'assalaamuaalaikum wa rahmathullahi wa barakaathuhu! Age is only relative to this world and we should not forget that we are made for ever but what should bother us is where will we stay for ever?? wsps. |
