Umm Ahmad, i guess your mistaken. Asyiah is the name of one of the mothers of the believers.
she was promised paradise from her beautiful patience and obedience.
she was the wife of the pharoah who beat her up until she smiled in the sky and said "oh lord build me a house in jannah and let me pass the torture of pharoah and let me pass the torture group (people) of thalimeen, (the disguided.)"
who told you that asiyah meant disobedience?
and even if it did, the mothers of the believers had that name.
like the story of Julaibib i guess.

I am sorry sis Barraa, but she was not mistaken.  I took the following excerpt from an article titled "Birth of a Child and Naming of a Child".

******
NAMING THE CHILD
It is the infant's vested right to be honoured with a good name. When choosing a name for the child, it should be done with the intention that the child will be blessed with the barakah of that name. Here are some Ahadeeth to show the importance of selecting a good and correct name:

Ibne Umar (RA) relates Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) as saying: "Truly, the most loved of your names by Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahmaan."

It is also reported in the Aboo Dawood that Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) said: "Keep the names of prophets. And the most desirable names by Allah Ta'ala are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahmaan. And names that depict honesty are Haarith (planter) and Hammaam (thoughtful). And the most disliked ones are Harb (battle) and Murrah (bitter).

THE BARAKAH OF NAMING A CHILD AFTER THE BELOVED NAME OF RASOOLULLAH (Sallallaahu ?layhi Wasallam)
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ?layhi Wasallam) said: "Whoever is named after me with the hope of being blessed, he will be blessed and will be in peace till the day of Qiyaamat."

He also said: "To whomever is born a boy and he names him Muhammad solely for the love of me and for the blessings of my name, then both he (the father) and his son will enter Jannah."

THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING GOOD NAMES
HADITH: "On the Day of Qiyaamah you will be called by your (own) names and the names of your fathers. Therefore keep good names." Aboo Dawood.

HADITH: "To whoever is born a child, the child should be given a good name and sound education. And when he becomes of age he should be married."

It Was Rasoolullah's (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) practice to enquire the names of persons and villages. If they were pleasant, it became apparent on his face. If not, his displeasure could be seen.

Once Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) called for a volunteer to milk a camel. Four persons volunteered: he refused to accept the services of the first three because their names did not imply pleasantness. The names of the first two were Murrah (bitter) while Jamrah (burning coal) was the name of the third person. When the fourth said his name is Yaeesh (long live) Rasoolullah sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam said to him: "Milk her."

UNDESIRABLE NAMES SHOULD BE CHANGED
Aa'ishah (RA) reports that Rasool sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam used to change displeasing names replacing them with good names. Abdullah bin Umar (RA) relates that one of his sisters was named Aasiyah (disobedient). Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) changed it to Jameelah (beautiful). Zainab (RA) says that I had been named Birrah (pious). Rasoolullah sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam said: "Do not claim piety for Allah knows best who amongst you are pious. Name her Zainab!"

NAMES MAY INFLUENCE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE
Sa'eed ibne Musayib (RA) relates from his father that his grandfather went to Rasoolullah sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam and was asked: "What is your name?" He replied: "Hazn" (sorrow). Rasoolullah sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam said: "You are Sahl." (contended). He replied: "I will not change the name my father had given me." The narrator says that thereafter sorrow continually remained with them.

KEEP AWAY FROM NAMES IMPLYING SHIRK
As Muslims, we should always abstain from keeping names implying any elements of Shirk, like adjoining the word 'Abd'(servant) to names or epithets other that those of Allah Ta'ala. Rasoolullah sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam also forbade keeping pompous and selfglorifying names, for this reveals arrogance and haughtiness - human elements most abhorred by Allah Ta'ala.

BE PROUD OF YOUR IDENTITY AND FAITH
Muslims should always be proud of their identity and faith. Nowadays, to conceal his identity, it is common practice for a person to 'westernize' his name, like substituting Yoosuf with Joe or Joseph, Sulaimaan with Solly or Sully, Faatimah with Fatli, Sumay-yah with Summi, etc. Efforts to distort such beautiful names merely reveal an un-Islamic and sacreligious attitude. Remember, there exists behind each Islamic name an Islamic spirit and meaning, which, when distorted, is ruined. For example, there is intended love for the Prophet of Islam, and barakah when naming a child Muhammad. But when Muhammad is called Mahmad or Gammat, this spirit of love for Rasoolullah sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam and the acquiring of barakah by such a name is shattered. Should we not then refrain from such sacreligious practices?

May Allah Ta'ala guide us so that we may realize the beauty and uniqueness of the religion of Islam propounded by no other than the one who is the best of Allah's creations-May Allah shower His choicest blessings upon him.

May Allah Ta'ala guide us on the Right Path.
********
Hope this clears things up some, inshaAllah.

Wasalaam

Aasyia and Asiya are two different names.  Aasiya, starting with an 'ayn, means disobedient.  Asiya, starting with an Alif is the name of Pharoah's wife.

Thanks Shahida for posting that...i did not get that email...send it again?

Aah, yes, there ARE 2 Aasiya's, and the one Shahida was referring to is with 3ain.  I still like that name, even better than the other Asiya, but I won't give that name ANYHOW, cuz some people might say it wrong or think it is supposed to be 3aasiya...don't want that confusion...

The reasons I chose Ahmad, aside from the obvious (name of our beloved Prophet  [saw], meaning=praiseworthy etc...), I really love many men named Ahmad, including my grandfather and my Wali, and some other prominent Islamic leaders, who I best not name in full... ;)

Someone i know (she'd kill me if I let out too much info about her family) has 5 brothers, and with the exception of 1, all of them are Prophet's names, and they are all in chronological order...Adam, Ibrahim, Yusuf, Abdallah(odd man out) and Muhammad.  She fits in between the last 2 boys.  I find it amazing how the mom knew Muhammad would be last, lol...just an interesting piece of info I thought I'd share about names...hehe

I think it is important to bare in mind the fact that kids do *tend* to be like the name, inshaAllah, and naming them after certain people could be umm, lets say "hazardous"...so it's best to stick to the really GOOD personalities, and not just name a child according to the aunty next door, becuz you know how she can nag, and you don't want that to be part of your kid's personality...hehehe, seriously though... 8)

Take care all my sisters
So go ahead, sis Barr, maybe you'll be the first to post the story behind the name?  I for one would LOVE to read it...
MashaAllah :)

I love the name Maryam, because one of the women who has given me inspiration, to be like her, would be none other than the Mother of Prophet Isa, Maryam a.s. She is my role model, whom I admire and look up to.

Her story began when her mother made du'a to Allah to give her a child that would be dedicated for His services. And to give birth and bring up a child (Maryam) who would be the chosen one to bear a Messenger of Allah, I think is such an honourable gift that Allah has given. Both to Maryam's mother and she herself. And what an honour too, to be brought up by another great man... the Messenger of Allah, Nabi Zakaria.

Even when she has a well-known status to be a woman of purity, she was being thrown to a malicious fitnah, and she had to go away, and give birth alone. Such tests that she had to go through... and all of this, to raise one of the greatest man of earth. .. can U just imagine, wot sort of a woman she is? Subhanallah....

And inshaAllah, I pray that my daughter would be like Maryam herself. A pure and saleh woman that exudes strength within her, who would grow up, dedicating herself to her Lord. Ameen.

Also, I know a wonderful sister called Maryam, who has been a strong pillar of support to her husband, who is a very active brother, mashaAllah. And my maternal instincts developed further when I am with her and see her with her children.

And of course, I love the sound of the name Maryam... and how it feels when you say the name.

So.. there you go... :) Something about Maryam :-) ... my Maryam :)

InshaAllah, I'll do Ansar and the rest  later :)

Wassalam :-)

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

Sis Shahida.. I'd love to hear about your stories too. And how abt the rest? I'm sure there's something behind the name that you like :) I and Umm Ahmed can't be the only ones telling stories, you know ;)

Anyways... here goes...

Something about Ansar...

One day, a brother related to us about the battle of Hunain in one of the study circles.

The battle occurred after the liberation of Makkah. When news spread that the Muslims liberated Makkah without a shed of blood, the tribe of Hawazin planned to attack the Muslims and mobilised an army on its way to Makkah.

The Muslims, with its enormous number of men, as never before, left Makkah for the battle at Hunayn, so that Mekkah would remain safe, and not be a place of fighting. Some of them were overide by confidence by their numbers.

However, during the battle, many Muslims lost heart, and many of them tried to run away, as they were overwhelmed by the army of Hawazin. Their ranks began to fall apart. And many became de-motivated to fight on... except for those few whose iman is brimming strong and is not easily de-motivated and overwhlemed by the disheartening flee of their comrades and the hot pursuit of their enemies.

Then, Muhammad's uncle, Abbas called loudly, and his voice resonated and heard by the Muslims  for them to be united and march forth in jihad... The Muslims then remember their oath and the sacrifices in the cause of Islam..  they gained their strength and continued to fight in the battle till they gained victory.

During the distribution of the spoils of war, the prophet distributed them to all of the Muslims, particularly, the Mekkans who have just embraced Islam... except for the Ansar. Some of the Ansar asked why have they not gotten the spoils of war, whereas they are the ones who have fought so hard in it.... and the Prophet's reply.. is the one that touched my heart...

He said... Don't you feel delighted that people should go with riches, and you should go back to your places with the Messenger of Allah? By Allah, that with which you would return is better than that with which they would return.

Then, they replied...Yes, Messenger of Allah, we are pleased.

Upon that, I saw how much the Prophet loves the Ansar. The people who have helped him, when he was ostracised by his own people, the generosity and softness of the hearts of the Ansar, such that they accept the truth with ease. The group of people who are willing to place their life for him, for the message... and most of all, for Allah.

It was then, that I learnt... that the name "Ansar" is more than just "Helpers".

Allahua'lam :-)

New revert here!  :-*
Everyone is talking about all these beautiful sounding names - I wish I knew what they all meant!  :)
This discussion does bring a question to mind. For reverts: When and how do you change your name to an Islamic name? Is there a particular time or ceremony? Does it have to be done by an Imam? And what about the attributes; I've always liked the name, "Kamilah". Is this not a good name?  ???

as salaamu alaykum,

I think this is a really good question.. no, you definitely don't have to name your child or change your name to one that is Arabic.  It's important to note that not all Muslim names are Arabic, or vice versa.  I think a lot of people choose Arabic names because there are some beautiful ones that have very 'Islamic' meanings (like AbdAllah [one who is devoted to Allah]), and also because ppl like to name their children after exemplary people in the past, ie the companions of the Prophet Muhammad [saw], or the prophets, who have what can be seen as very 'eastern' sounding names.

In terms of what Islam says, as long as your name does not mean or refer to something that is *unIslamic*, any name is fine.  (examples of unislamic names: the name of a Hindu god, or a name like Christian)  Also, since preserving the family ties and family lineage is something emphasized a great deal in Islam, it's important to keep your last name the same, as it is what identifies you with your family.

As far as I know there is no official naming ceremony.

Kamilah in Arabic means pefect or complete.  If you do decide to change your name, Kamilah sounds very nice to me :)

and Allah knows best.

wasalaamu alaykum :)

As-salam-ualakum,
My personal favorite girl's name are : Yasmeen, Imaan (most favorite), Sumayyah, Mehr-un-nisa(not certain what it means but it has a very lyrical sound).

For boys: Zachariah, Ahmed.
After you name your child, you keep thinking of all the other wonderful names you could have picked....Hmm, I wonder if she'll will notice if I change it now  :)

I think that the name Lena is very pretty, but I'm a bit biased, because it's my Mom's name.   :)
