salam To reply to the brother - This is not an issue with permissions set by the web server it is actually the way in which the domain is hosted. There are two main types of hosting, dedicated and virtual. A dedicated host has it's own IP address or set of IP addresses and usually as an entire web instance (eg foobar.com) bound to one IP address. Such instances can be referenced by their fully qualified domain name. A virtual host is a web instance that hosts a number of domains. Most web servers have this virtual hosting functionality - it allows for completely different domain names (e.g foobar.com and barfoo.com) to be hosted under the same web instance. However since these are hosted under the same instance they cannot be referenced by their fully qualified domain name when entered into a web browser - if you type foobar.com the name needs to resolve to a unique IP address. However when virtual hosted if you append www.foobar.com the name can resolve to a non-unique IP address (one which is being used to host a number of other sites) and the web server deals with the process of displaying the correct web content (through a configuration file) With virtual hosting you lose your own unique IP address and share one with other web sites. Virtual hosting allows for a large number of sites to be hosted without eating up IP addresses (which are becoming scarce - hence the drive for IPv6, which is another thread altogether) and consequently virtually hosting is alot cheaper. However you do lose the ability to referenced by your fully qualified domain, which has similar implications with ftp and mail related to your domai. Dedicated hosting is more expensive, but you have your own IP address and can be referenced by your fully qualified domain. If you are a high-load site using a fair amount of bandwidth you do not want to be sharing that bandwidth with other web sites, and virtually hosted setups involve websites sharing one network card (because they share one IP address), hence they are sharing bandwidth. However dedicated hosting can ivolve more than one IP address being bound to a network card (multiplexing) so the disadvantage may not apply. It's all about understanding the underlying technology, and the rest is easy. Hope this helps. wa salam |
