the guest house

this being human is a guest house.
every morning a new arrival.

a joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

welcome and entertain them all!
even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
he may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

the dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

instead of starting somewhere new, i'm just putting this here...

maybe this is my own little descriptive progression...
we'll see where it leads, with me just about a half step ahead of whatever i put here..

love dogs:

one night a man was crying,
                                               Allah!  Allah!

his lips grew sweet with the praising,
until a cynic said,
                               "so!  i have heard you
calling out, but have you ever
gotten any response?

the man had no answer to that.
he quit praying and fell into a confused sleep.

he dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls,
in a thick, green foliage.
                               "why did you stop praising?"
"because i've never heard anything back."
                                                                   "this longing
you express is the return message.

the grief you cry out from
draws you toward union.

your pure sadness
that wants help
is the secret cup.

listen to the moan of a dog for its master.
that whining is the connection.

there are love dogs
no one knows the names of.

give your life
to be one of them.

the worm's waking

this is how a human being can change:

there's a worm addicted to eating
grape leaves.

                        suddenly he wakes up,
call it grace, whatever, something
wakes him, and he's no longer
a worm.

                        he's the entire vineyard,
and the orchard too, the fruit, the trunks,
a growing wisdom and joy
that doesn't need
to devour.

             ***********

from "a basket of fresh bread"......

don't look for it outside yourself.
you are the source of the milk.  don't milk others!

there is a milk fountain inside you.
don't walk around with an empty bucket.

you have a channel into the ocean, and yet
you ask for a little water from a little pool.

beg for that love expansion.  meditate only
on THAT.  the qur'an says,
                             and He is with you
                                               (57:4)

there is a basket of fresh bread on your head,
yet you go door to door asking for crusts.

knock on your inner door.  no other.
sloshing knee-deep in fresh riverwater, yet
you keep wanting a drink from other people's waterbags.

water is everywhere around you, but you see only
barriers that keep you from water.

the horse is beneath the rider's thighs, and still
he asks, "where's my horse?"
                                    right there, under you!

"yes, this is a horse, but where's the horse?"
                                              can't you see!

"yes, i can see, but whoever saw such a horse?"

mad with thirst, he can't drink from the stream
running so close by his face.  he's like a pearl
on the deep bottom, wondering, inside his shell,
where's the ocean?

                          his mental questionings
form the barrier.  his physical eyesight
bandages his knowing.  self-consciousness
plugs his ears.

                       stay bewildered in God,
and only that.

                       those of you who are scattered,
simplify your worrying lives.  there is one
righteousness:  water the fruit trees,
and don't water the thorns.  be generous
to what nurtures the spirit and God's luminous
reason-light.  don't honor what causes
dysentery and knotted-up tumors.

don't feed both sides of yourself equally.
the spirit and the body carry different loads
and require different attentions.

                                          too often
we put saddlebags on jesus and let the donkey
run loose in the pasture.

                                  don't make the body do
what the spirit does best, and don't put a big load
on the spirit that the body could carry easily.

story water

a story is like water
that you heat for your bath.

it takes messages between the fire
and your skin.  it lets them meet,
and it cleans you!

very few can sit down
in the middle of the fire itself
like a salamander or Abraham.
we need intermediaries.

a feeling of fullness comes,
but usually it takes some bread
to bring it.

beauty surrounds us,
but usually we need to be walking
in a garden to know it.

the body itself is a screen
to shield and partially reveal
the light that's blazing
inside your presence.

water, stories, the body,
all the things we do, are mediums
that hide and show what's hidden.

study them,
and enjoy this being washed
with a secret we sometimes know,
and then not.

Bismillah

it's a habit of yours to walk slowly.
you hold a grudge for years.
with such heaviness, how can you be modest?
with such attachments, do you expect to arrive anywhere?

be as wide as the air to learn a secret.
right now you're equal portions clay
and water, thick mud.

Abraham learned how the sun and moon and all the stars set.
he said, no longer will i try to assign partners for God.

you are so weak.  give up to grace.
the ocean takes care of each wave
till it gets to shore.
you need more help than you know.
you're trying to live your life in open scaffolding.
say Bismillah, In the name of God,
as the priest does with a knife when he offers an animal.

Bismillah your old self
to find your real name.

well, i um don't hold grudges...and i don't assign partners, but....the rest.. hmmmm...

sis sara,

yup, they are.  sorry - i forgot to identify those two.

in fact all of these are from just one collection, "the essential rumi".
but i've heard that these translations, by coleman barks, might not
be the best ones.......might not always do the words justice.

(hee heee if i'd started out with a plan to put up more after that first one, i could have instead titled this thread "very non-random rumi".... ;))

Now she was swimming alone in a water-maze, and she was determined to overcome her fear of it.
She kept this in her mind as she swam:

Late, by myself, in the boat of myself,
No light and no land anywhere,
Cloudcover thick.  I try to stay
Just above the surface, yet I’m already under
And living within the ocean.

                     ~~~~~~~
Does sunset sometimes look like the sun’s coming up?
Do you know what a faithful love is like?
You’re crying.  You say you’ve burned yourself.
But can you think of anyone who’s not
Hazy with smoke?
Lo, I am with you always means when you look for God,
God is in the look of your eyes,
in the thought of looking, nearer to you than yourself,
or things that have happened to you.
thee's no need to go outside.
be melting snow.
wash yourself of yourself.
a white flower grows in the quietness.
let your tongue become that flower.
A hand shifts our birdcages around.
Some are brought closer. Some move apart.
Do not try to reason it out. Be conscious
of who draws you and who not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Be tough, and strength will come.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If thou wilt be observant and vigilant,
thou wilt see at every moment the response to thy action.
Be observant if thou wouldst have a pure heart,
for something is born to thee in consequence of every action.
