now that we are wedding planners!!! 8) i was wondering if anyone has any good ideas about weddings... like what's the coolest nicest things you've seen at weddings before??  punch fountains? cool nasheed singers? floating candles? exploding cakes ;) stuff like that

also ... does anyone have any cool wedding favor ideas for 300 guests?? I know at one wedding here the bride gave out these miniQurans from Saudi which was very nice...! I was thinking a small piece of hand-done islamic calligraphy.. but where would we get that here!! ahh well

strawberries with warm chocolate to dip them in......

my sister had these at her wedding.  it's not messy -- the chocolate hardens instantly.  (the corner where they were seemed to always have an immobile crowd.....for some reason......??)

Walikum aslam :)

MiniQur'ans are awesome... one of my friends at her nikkah gave away miniQur'ans and if you open the Qur'an the inside blank page that you usually have right next to the hardcover.. They printed their names and and date in arabic and pasted it *neatly* on them.. When i first looked at it i thought that her mom probably got them printed from syria but if you look closely they had pasted it on the Quran.. mashaAllah very cute..

Another thing is cute bookmarks, they can be easily done umm you can have nice hadiths and ayahs from the Qur'an and stuff, their names and the  date or anything else  :-X This bookmark that i got from my friends wedding is sooo cute and it has this sheer ribbon going through it..

~I love the typical wedding favors with the jordanian almonds and hershey kisses or as on some desi weddings the dried dates  :-X and almonds . But this neat wedding favor that i saw recently was in this box instead of the typical bag and the front of it was transparent , so you could see what was inside and right next to the goodies they had this cute silver frame with a really cute thoughtful poem the groom wrote for the bride :)

Floating candles are awesome yumm chocolate covered strawberries.
he he the best part of the nikkah is the dessert..  :) :)

InshaAllah khair with everything..

We had these at our wedding too, way back when.  But I think we had them made in the kitchen and then brought out to the tables to avoid the crowding mwishka mentioned.  For what it's worth, we had no leftover strawberries!

When I was in Turkey two summers ago, I went to a wedding with my cousins, and SubhanAllah it was beautiful. i'll show you this thing that they gave at the wedding, what you guys have been talking about the whole time, with the name of bride and groom on it, etc, it's that kind of ornament.  It's soo pretty, i'd like to describe it, but then you'd fall asleep  ;)

But anyways, I know of some cool stuff that my aunts did, and InshaAllah i'll make a list for you.  I'll give it to you whenever i see you, InshaAllah

salaams,
AyeshaZ was that wedding with the tiny qurans the Atiya wedding?  Because they had the same small quran but the were in a silver holder, that was really ritzy.  No one could get their Qurans out of the holders though.

Some ideas I think are cool, more of an american flavor too since I am american, using bubbles instead of rice when the bride and groom leave.  Putting disposable cameras on all the table to get candid pictures of all who attended.  The only thing is when we did that, people who arent use to such things didn't know what to do.  Many in the muslim community aren't hip to the Martha Stewart wedding ideas.  Also with the seating, I would go with families in the middle and single males and female on the side.  It's a way to have some seperation and still allow families to be together.  It's a family affair!

Assalamu alaikum,
My sister's wedding was the most beautiful one I've ever been to.  She didn't have her invitations hand calligraphied but they were printed on this beautiful paper which I think is handmade and had flowers woven or imbedded in the paper.  There was an ayah on it but it was just the english translation because a lot of their family friends were non-Muslim.
She had a three tiered wedding cake: Chocolate, carrot and white.
Most of the food was cooked by friends, so there was food from all over the world :)
They had the wedding in her inlaw's front yard (which is huge, and they live sort of out of town almost in the countryside.  We decorated it with ribbons (streamers) tied to bamboo sticks.
May Allah bless the bride and groom and the wedding planners; and may it soon be their wedding that is being planned.

naeem u might get that chance to come to albaani one day soon :)  when i first had my homepage at albany.edu people used to write me and say do you know albaani? can you ask him a question.. i think they thought it was his official homepage!!!

anyways i love the camera idea! but i'm just thinking of the costs of maybe 30-50 cameras and processing yikes! but i just thought of something like a little area where a camera and tripod are set up and everyone can go there a few at a time and just give a little message to the bride and the groom...and that they can keep forever as a memory of their wedding...

mf about that paper idea i think they have invitations like that i'll check it out inshallah :)
jazakamullahu khair for all the ideas!!

Bismillahirrahmaanirraheem!

Assalaamuaalaikum wa rahmathullahi wa barakaathuhu!

Once Zainab, who was a very shy, God-fearing and always in hijaab was married to Abdullah. She distributed the mini-Qurans to all her guests and finally when Abdullah's turn came she did not have anything left!!!

Abdullah whispered quitely....what's for me Zainab?

She said, I have hid myself from every non-mahrem man and guarded what Allah ordered me to guard, preserved myself since years when I hardly knew you and here I am , a noble gift for you to whom I am married...

Its not a true incident but well, I wish if my wife(when I get married insha Allah) would give me such a gift....

"And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes."

Wa'assalaamuaalaikum wa rahmathullahi wa barakaathuhu!

are you SURE you have the right name?  there's a publisher called citadel (imprint of kensington books) that puts out small books, but, though they have the life of muhammad, and the life of omar khayyam, and the book of the koran, other than that they have,um, wiccan books, jewish books, and things like the little book of insults and the book of female sensual dominance --- plus lots of others that are um just not what i think you meant!!!

i'd really like to find the book of prayers you describe, though.........!

I think this is a great book and have given it to others as presents many times.
It has transliteration for those who cannot read the arabic script, but its better to read what u understand so u don't say it wrong.

its was the citadel of the belivers ,actaully read the belivers part after i posted so couldnt do much about it (like the usual story of my life ;)) the copy i have was researched by Said Bin Ali Bin Wahaf AlQahtani transaled  by Omar Johnstone
published by DARUSSALAM , PO BOX 22743 RIYADH 11416 SAUDI ARABIA

YOU CAN ALSO GET IT AT
DARUSSALAM PO BOX 737651,CORONA ELMHURST NY QUEENS NY 11373 TEL 718 699 5366

In my opinion a great wedding idea would have a very simple wedding
collect the money you would have spent on a grander one and send it to someone who cant afford to   get  married

Its a sad state of affairs \I know for sure  atleast in India lots of ladies are single because they cant afford to get married
so what better way (in my opinion)  to start a newlife by also facilitating  your br/sr who cant afford it get started on one
[wlm]
please pray for me
btw the citadel of the belivers makes a great gift

Bismillah and salam,

I like the ideas. But I didn't know that we had to do that giving the guests presents. Is it sunnah? If so, I saw this idea i like
http://www.elegantcheesecakes.com/wedding-cakes/take_home_daisycake_img.html

or maybe a little bit of bukhoor in a maroon satin home-made rap (you saw the top like a fold and put the doubled up black string through it so you tug at each side. if you are intereseted i will email details of how to make the bag. it is too simple masha'Allah)

My sister went to a kaffir wedding and they gave her hershey's kisses in a loooong thing glass.

you can have a chocolate rose LOL
http://www.1chocolaterose.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TCR&Category_Code=W

but i wouldn't go for the very expensive invitations, most people don't keep them forever excpet direct family. And they make the less fortunate feel bad and set a high standard for the muslim community to live up to. keep it simple i say. the hand made paper is so easy to make, buy the pulp paper mush it in old blender with water, throw in some colorful flowers and a few leaves, if you ahve an old window screen even it out on it, a thin layer, when it is not totally dry but not so heavy take it off (peel from corners to avoid breaking) then throw it fast on a window. it will drop all the water and give a very much smoother texture unless you like it rough. (well form the screen it will be little little squares)

But at the wedding you can have nicer things, because no one has time to think about themselves when they see the beauty of a wedding in the eyes of Allah. Personally i think the cake is most important.

here is a nice cake:
http://www.elegantcheesecakes.com/wedding-cakes/3_gift_box_img.html

another version of the present cake (can you tell i like that hehe)
http://www.montilios.com/newweb/montilios/wedding_cake_present.htm

Here is a nice one if you are having the greek style pillars with vines around them, or the arched vines thing behind where the bride sits.
You can even have a few butterfly decorations hanging and on the walls. that's whimsical. i htink it would be nice then the little girls can put the clips of butterflies in their hair. and it can be the napkin holder easily made.
http://www.edibleexpressions.com/Butterfly.jpg

Also many ladies don't want to be on video or photos. So it's nice to have a voice message put on the little recordres with tiny casette inside? or start them on a marriage scrap book. THe guests write short sentence wishes or helpful hints, advice, recipe, jokes, etc. and then later they can keep adding things to it whether it's pictures, sentimental things, etc.

If you like you can also take the flowers used in the wedding (well, some of them) and make them preserved. you dry them, preserve them, frame them. It can be professionaly done. Here is an example, but instead of a picture of the wedding, since we shouldn't put that, you can put a marriage aya.

Bismillah and salam,

sister Barr really it is not that fragile. The hand made paper is much thicker than regular baught paper. ok I will try to explain what you are doing:

-you buy the sheets of pulp, you cut them up. just rip with hands into smaller peaces. you put it in the blender with the water etc

-when it is not totally fine but sortof like cotton candy looking it is good.

-you take it out and you crunch the old flowers you have and some leaves. try not to crunch it up too too small nor too too big.

-you bring the window screen (or you can make it buy getting a wood frame and stablign the wire screen tight on it) and you put it on top of the sink, or if it can sit on the banio bath tub.

-Then you pour it out and even it out and let it drip

-after awhile once it is solidified more but still damp. peel it gently from the corners so it doesn't break up. here if your frame is huge you can bring an exacto knife and break the paper into smaller page size once.
I like to make it tha size to begin with even if the frame is big because i like the messy edges, it is alot mroe romantic then sciosors cut ones.

- then you take this one paper , hold it like a waitress holds the tray. put your elbow to the window, and the quick jerky movement you put the damp paper on the window. But the trick is to push from down to up or whatever direction to make sure no folds happen. it is easy when you do it. but you odn't have to do that part, it is only if you want a very smooth texture.

If i am too confusing  :( you can get a book from the library probably with pictures. or it is on the net http://dir.yahoo.com/Arts/Design_Arts/Paper/Papermaking_Recipes/

ok about the handmade invitations, you can actually do it with that paper but made smamller , and punch two holes and put a nice ribbon through
or make it to be floded like the picutre here:
http://www.custompaper.com/home.html

for other ideas of handmade invitations go to the crafts people shows sites and search it. here is one:
